What is your feeling about what the Holy Spirit is? Jesus describes the Holy Spirit as another Helper sent by God, who will stay with us forever if we ask. Pleaase help me to understand what this means. What is the Holy Spirit exactly?

The Holy Spirit is God. God is three Persons in One: God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit. Each has the same attributes and personality and power, but each has different responsibilities. The Trinity is difficult for our finite minds to comprehend, but we know it is true. The closest explanation I can give is not very good, but helps us to understand. Let us consider water. Water can be liquid or solid (ice) or vapour (steam) but all three are water. A further example is an egg. An egg has three parts: yolk, white and shell and we use each part for different purposes, but it is still an egg. The Holy Spirit was present at creation. "The Spirit moved on the face of the waters". Throughout the Old Testament, we see the Spirit descending on various people to reveal the will of God, to empower for a particular job, to give wisdom, and for other purposes. In the New Testament, we see the Holy Spirit impregnating Mary. We see Him in the form of a dove at the baptism of Jesus and read that He led Jesus into the wilderness. Another work of the Holy Spirit was to "breathe into" men the words to write as they recorded what we know as the Scriptures. When Jesus said He would send the Holy Spirit after His resurrection, He wasn't talking about something new. He said this Holy Spirit has been WITH you and shall be IN you. The Holy Spirit lives in God's people. In fact Paul tells us in 1 Cor 6:19 that our bodies are the temple of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is our Comforter, our Advocate, our Teacher and more. He enables us to understand the Word of God and He strengthens and enables us to serve the Lord. He gives us words to speak as we witness. The work of the Holy Spirit is also to convict the world of sin, of judgement and of righteousness.

When you first learn about God, you learn about God the Father. Later, you learn about Jesus the Savior. The Holy Spirit is the part of God that you learn about as you grow in your faith and learn to depend upon God. The Holy Spirit can comfort you, can nudge you to do something you need to do, can give you a feeling of something being not quite right to show you what not to do, or that you are getting ready to do something you know you shouldn't. The Holy Spirit is gentle and quiet, and so you need to become accustomed to hearing the nudgings. The Holy Spirt can give you peace and contentment in your everyday life. God is an awesome God!

I think of the Holy Spirit as God's Presence.. To me, there are Two, the father and the son.. yet they are so close - Jesus being the "firstborn of all creation" and the "OnLy begotten of God" - the only straight out from God.. so is forever closest to God in essence, substance and character.. they are so close that both can minister the Spirit of God.. What I mean to say is, in the plant or animal kingdom there is many, in the God Kingdom, there is the Father and the Son.. We say a married couple are "one" - so too, did Jesus say "I and my Father are one" - and He prayed to the Father and said "the Father is greater than I". God bless..

flowerchilde, we say a married couple are one. I just thought I would mention that in marriage a woman's existence is temporarily suspended. The same would apply to the God/Jesus relation. It is ironic that the Holy Ghost is neither the father or son yet He is also both at the same time.

When the Lord Jesus was baptized, the Lord Himself went down into the water to be baptized by John, then the Holy Spirit as a dove was coming on the Lord Jesus then the Father spoke out from heaven and so there are the three of them - not three in one but they are actually three as proven by the Lord Himself, the Holy Spirit as dove, and the voice of the Father in heaven - they are all present in once occasion. Before the Lord went up, He said that He will send the Paraclete which is the Holy Spirit. Because the Lord had to go up, He could not be here and so it is the Holy Spirit that is here doing His works of teaching, etc. Accordingly, the Greek word for spirit is pneuma which is also translated as wind. We cannot see the wind in the same manner that we cannot see the spirit. We can feel the wind and we can also feel the spirit being in us and that is proven if we obey the word of God. If we do not obey the word of God, the Spirit of God is not in us.

He does not say in this passage he will give you the Holy Spirit but the spirit of truth for the eon. This spirit of truth will not be seen or understood but lives in you. Jesus is comforthing his disciples with these words since he knows that it will not belong before he will ascend to heaven.

Before Jesus ascended to heaven, He promised that a Helper (Holy Spirit) will replaced Him. He said 'helper' because the Holy Spirit will help Christians in any aspect while in the world. As Counselor, He helps us how to pray and convicts us. As Guide, He gives us wisdom and discernment. As Comforter, He helps us to ease out our worries/ doubts of this world and replaced it by faith and hope. As Protector, He give us strength and protects the people of God from all harm and the devil. The Holy Spirit is the SEAL of God to every believer-- He help us to focus more on God.

My understanding of the Holy Ghost is, He (I say he because He impregnate the virgin Mary) is the most powerful entity of the Trinity. You can sin against God and Jesus will forgive you, you can sin against Jesus and God will forgive you but you cannot joke with the Holy Ghost. If you make the mistake and sin against the Holy Ghost you cannot enter heaven.

This concept can be very confusing. You get into discussing the trinity, and different religious teachings, many of which stray from the truth God has already revealed. I understand the Spirit as the movement of God, not necessarily a separate being, or persona. You can read about the Spirit all through scripture, of God's breathe, and the Spirit of God, etc. Before Jesus this movement only occurred to a select few and only and specific times. But after Jesus, after the cleansing from his blood, after his redemption for all sinners, the Holy Spirit was released for all, to abide with all, and to assist and guide all who accept His gift of salvation. When you hear people speak about a feeling they had when reading or watching something, this I believe is the holy spirit talking to us. You get an overwhelming sense of peace, this is the holy spirit letting you know you are on the right track. You get an overwhelming sense of fear or angst, this is the spirit warning you that you are on the wrong track. Another form is communication. God is not human, therefore does not speak our language, the Holy spirit serves as a translator. He can hear our thoughts, even when we can't sort them out for ourselves, and translate them into words God understands, and visa versa. JMO
