Would you rather send your kid to a school that had uniforms, or let the child express there creativity and send them to a school where they can wear what they would like. I understand having uniforms helps deter problems with people being made fun of for there clothing, or destractions such as short skirts or rude or inappropriate slogans or pictures, etc. Do you think schools should have the right to make your children wear there uniform?

Requiring the students to wear uniform is not only for purposes of deterring problems such as those you have mentioned, but to instill discipline among the students as well. Remember that in school, students get to learn every possible thing to mold them to become good people and better persons. Education is a must, but it is not a privilege. It is still the prerogative of an institution if they want to accept a student or not. Those who do not want to follow the rules set by the school are free to look for an institution that follows what the students want.

Thanks for point that out g_aileen. I agree schools also help instil dicipline in our children, but we should also be doing this at home. Do you think it is our schools obligation to instill life's values into our children, or just teach them material? Schools in my area don't seem to teach the children anything more than what's provided in there book. Children will remember there school experiences there whole life, so making sure they have a good education will help them succeed the rest of their life. Thanks for opening my eyes.

I agree with you that it is not the sole responsibility of the schools to teach the children good values. It should be done primarily at home. But then again, going back to the uniforms...just to elaborate my argument further... if with this simple regulation, students and parents could not comply... what then will become of these students when they eventually get to work in companies that require their employees to wear uniforms? will they also object? I am passionate about this, because i have a former staff who used to hate using uniforms where in fact she should be following office regulations.

Aileen im glad you have come back to respond on this topic. I agree schools are not only there to teach the information in the book, but to give our children the tools needed to succeed throughout their life. Time and time again I read news stories about tragic events happening at school that could have been avoided if someone took the time to sit down and listen and talk with the child. Im also very passionate about the future of our world, the children, as they are all we have. I agree school is a privledge, and many people take advantage of the great school systems we have in place. There will never be a perfect school system, but we must strive to continue to improve for our children's sake.

I do feel a school had the right to make this decision and wish our schools down here had it . Children often pick on other students about the clothes they have and with uniforms it would eliminate this added stress to children . Not all parents can afford to buy top of the line clothes for their children and yet children don't take this into consideration when they decide to harass another student about what he or she has or doesn't have .

Thanks for your reply sam. I agree that often children can pick on other children based upon the clothing they have chosen. Uniforms does releive some of this bias towards lower incoming children, or children that express their creativity in ways that seem different to the others. I don't think a child should have to indure derogatory comments because they are not as wealthy as the next kid.

I went to a school that required uniforms (just a school tee-shirt), and I remember hating it, just because. I kept forgetting to wear the uniform, and had to go back home to get it, and somehow, wearing the same (or identical) shirt every day gets boring really, really, quickly.

Yeah I can understand hating the uniforms, as anyone that is forced upon us we usually hold negative opinions about. Looking back on them, do you think it was a good idea now, that you were required to wear them in school, or do you wish they would have allowed you to choose your own clothing? That would be a pain forgetting to wear the uniform, but after a few weeks you probably get adjusted to the change.

It doesn't matter whether the school has uniform or not. But I think if a school has this requirement, it is a good thing for its formal management, and as I know, the students are asked to wear uniforms only for some fixed day, not every weekday at school. the school may have the right to do so.

i am against school uniforms. It suppreses freedom, uniqueness, individuality, creativity and the ability to express ourselves. oftentimes clothes, what we wear, fashion, style, give us the avenue to convey what we believe in,what we think especially where we lack the verbosity to do so otherwise. School uniforms defeat all of these.

Cuddle im glad you have given your opinion here. Im glad you take a strong stance on one side of this debate, and you make some valid arguments. I agree that it supresses uniqueness and individuality. I am all for creativity, and if it takes this away, what does it give in return? Is instiling dicipline more important than giving our children a chance to find themselves? Thanks for your reply cuddle.

In my city, most of the schools need their students to wear uniform, and I think that it is great! Because we don't need to think what to wear to school everyday! A uniform is good for those poor kids who do not have enough money to buy a lot of clothes. What do others think?

I believe more and more schools are switching to uniforms for their students. This can be shown as a positive step, or a negative step, depending upon your beliefs. Uniforms seem to help out with bullying and being picked on, but is this taking our childrens creative abilities and putting them in a shell, shielding our children from negative influences that they will experience later in life? Thanks for sharing your views xeron.

I don't know that I agree with taking away from creativity from kids for making them wear a school uniform. I think it is a bigger plus than minus as it stops the bullying and kids being made fun of by others... it also helps with detering gang activity within schools. I think if you want to boost a child's creativity, lobby for more money to back into the arts, music and physical education in our schools. Without the arts and music, our children lose something vital in their education. There are all kinds of ways to be creative, and I think those ways need to be explored more and keep the uniforms intact in public schools.

uniform - school uniform
i think it's better if school requires wearing uniforms. it helps as better identification in case of emergencies, people will recognize people wearing uniforms easily. and also, you wont be bothered anymore what your child is going to wear everyday. in my case i dont have to worry matching clothes everyday cause we do have uniforms. and besides your kid will look good and neat with uniforms.

Thanks for your reply MG. It could potentially help with identification, but wouldn't possibly be harder to locate a child if they all are wearing the same uniform? Atleast without uniforms and they have an emergency come up, maybe someone could describe a unique outfit which would help find the student quicker. I agree uniforms look very sharp.

i prefer my children to wear a school uniform... if children can wear anything to school, then the school will become a fashion show and the rich students can start look down or even mock the less rich students because their clothes are not as fancy as them... it is also to teach the children discipline... so i think it is a very good practice for school to insist on children to wear uniform...

Here in Australia, ALL schools, primary and high, State and private, wear uniforms. I believe a uniform has many benefits. Firstly, it is a leveller. Sure, some uniforms will always look better because the child comes from a home that cares. The uniform will be clean and well ironed. There will be children who look bedraggled because their uniform has been worn all week and never ironed, but the uniform is still a leveller. At last a uniform cuts out the "glamour pusses" and raises the status of the "raggies". There is no brand name snobbery and no out-doing one another. A uniform also gives a sense of belonging, of togetherness, which can mean a lot to children from broken homes and abuse situations. A uniform, in these days of child abductions, can also be a safety measure. Economics is another factor for many families. School uniforms are not cheap, but especially at high school, they are so much cheaper than the constant battle for "label" clothes and the need to outdo their peers. I believe a child and a teen have plenty of opportunity to express their creativity outside of school hours. I'm sure uniforms would be difficult to implement in America, since they have a long history of no uniforms, but most, on leaving school and entering the work force will be wearing uniforms.

Our kids have to wear school uniforms. In some ways, it's a lot easier to dress them since they have to have either a navy blue, white, or red polo shirt with sleeves and a collar and their pants [or skirts] have to be either navy blue or a light tan. We don't have much money but we look for the school uniforms we need at thrift stores and find them there. The two boys can share the uniforms, hand them down so I don't see a problem with them. They look very handsome in their uniforms, the school programs have a more coordinated look to them, and everyone knows that they are there at school to work. I encourage the kids to be creative at home so neither one of them seem stifled in any way though I do know what you mean. I always hated it when the teachers would not let me color my pictures the way that I wanted, telling me that the sky was blue and the trees were brown and green, sure, that's true but I didnt' always want my pictures to look like everyone else's!

Yea I can see why it's a lot easier to dress them. I think this can be a great benefit to families that just don't have the capital to keep their children in the latest fashions. It is sad that school can and does turn into fashion shows, with the wealthier children having the upper hand in the food chain. It's great that you challenge your children to be creative at home, and im sure that helps them form their own individuality. I too hated when I was told how to paint, or draw, or color this or that blue, without using our imaginations where would this world be at today? The best inventors in the world had some of the best imaginations. I believe you should not strive to fit in, but do what you feel is comfortable and if other people resent you for that, then it is their loss in the end. Thanks for taking the time to post your opinions on this topic horsesrule.

I will send my kid to a school that had uniforms. That helps to create environment with the sense of equality. In colleges they get the exemption form wearing uniform. In schools if they learn equality irrespective of financial, cultural background. This will lead them to be a better person ,I think.

I understand what your saying about equality. Putting everyone on a level playing field, can stop fights, and bullying, or atleast limit it to a certain degree. With this equality, maybe students can find friendship with people they would not have been open to in the past. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and opinions on this topic shil.

in my opinion schools should have the right to make uniforms a requirement for their students. because uniforms help overcome the class differences and also prevents competition between children about what kind of cloths they wear or r wearing!

Great point about different clothing styles adding competition to the children. There are always the group of children that have to have the "in thing" in terms of clothing, and their parents buy them the hip new clothing that comes out every week. This creates competition and an unfair one at that, in the end this only discourages children from expressing their styles. Thanks kaplya.

Yes, I do think that a school has the right to make the students wear uniforms. Were this not the case, then freedom of expression would not exist. Parents have the choice of sending their children to a school that prescribes to a dress code, or not. For better or for worse, it is also the right of a school board to decide what shape or form the school dress code should take, and parents should not think that they have any right to interfere. If you feel strongly about school uniforms, then don't send your children to a formal school, but also don't deny the rights of other parents who want to send their children to school in uniform. There is no advantage or disadvantage to a school uniform, I have attended both types of school, and in my opinion, it boils down to personal preference.

This is a hot topic,I have six-year's experiences of wearing uniforms. In Beijing, middle school students are all restricted to wear uniforms,in fact, nobody would like to do so ,everyone likes wearing what he or she wants. In my oppinion, wearing the same clothes,we loose our freedon and our own individuality ,what's a pity! Schools should think about students' idea as ofen as possible, after all, students is the future of the world.

School uniforms are mandatory in my country...I dint have any problem in wearing uniforms beacause all the schools had uniforms. If it was compulsory only in some schools, then i might have thought of shifting. I dont think schools should have the right to make your children wear their uniform. It takes away the freedom of expression. But it will take some time to change, especially in conservative countries...

I have studied in 3 exclusive all girls schoool all my education life and all these schools have required us to wear school uniforms. When I was in college and I had HS classmates who went to schools where they had no uniforms, I noticed that they had a hard time planning what to wear the next day. They also said it was more expensive on their part because they did not want to wear the same clothes in a span of a few months. Here in the Philippines, most exclusive schools require to wear uniform. Some colleges also.

Definitely yes. THe fact that all students should come in proper uniform everyday, in itself brings in the sense of discipline in kids. Also it teaches the kids to regard School seriously and not something which can be taken for granted. But the main and the basic reason for which Uniform was introduced in school was that there should be uniformity in a place of teaching. Whether a student is from a upperclass or middleclass family, when they come to school there should be no such difference. This will help them to concentrate on studies. Also if colour dress is introduced in school, they may be distrative for the students.

Generally, school uniforms seem to work best for schools in lower income areas and less so in middle-class and upper-class areas.
27 Feb 07
I really don't understand how you arrived at that conclusion. I believe uniforms instil discipline and a sense of belonging in the pupils AS WELL AS discouraging discrimination against those that might not be able to afford the latest fashions - it's got nothing whatsoever to do with 'class'.

To Begin with Iam a matured and old man already but to a question wherein that "what do you think of schools requiring students to wear uniforms" I agree that it is a good idea and good standing when a school requires their student to wear a uniform so that there is a distinction and to know them. And it is also nice to see them and know their schools identity and let them know what schools are they in studying. Also this is the basis of Employer whom in the future you like to apply for a job there is a classification and distinction and you have the edge in applying for a job and you have the preference. now in some office they are looking for in a job applicant where and what schools you come from. So for me it is an edge and a prestige for a schools who require their student to wear their uniforms so that there is uniformity within the schools wherein they are studying

All my school years I always wore a school uniform and I never had a provblem with it, now I have children of my own and they also wear a school uniform and they don't mind it either. Actually they prefer to go to school and not have to think about what they will wear each day!
