I read in some of the posts that if you write long responses, instead of writing 1 sentences, that you increase your earnings. How much do we get paid for long posts? I can't find any information on that. And does the earnings include writing long messages, when I start discussions?

My suggestion is, don't think about the earnings when you respond here at mylot. Just start typing out your ideas. I'm sure it'll just flow and before you know it, you have just created at least 3 or even several paragraph answers. Try to participate in discussions that will most likely be retained for years.

As far as I know myLot does not disclose the exact algorithm they use to calculate payout and they are free to change it any time to encourage higher quality posts. In fact a few weeks ago that's exactly what they did. They went through and deleted many of the one liner no brainer responses and recalculated earnings. The end results were people who were just in it for the money and gave valueless response lost money and people who made quality response made money.
