What to do about overweight children

February 26, 2007 1:28pm CST
A friend of mine is woried sick about her daughter and so am I. Her daughter is putting on weight more and more. At first we thought it was just 'puppy fat' but shes getting a double chin at eight. She has no energy and is always on the hunt for food. She does go to lots of exercise classes but hates them for obvious reasons. Can anyone help? We would very much appreciate it.

One thing she could do is take her to the doc and see if anything can be done.Another thing, your friend as the parent has to learn to put her foot down and say no.She is the boss, not the daughter.just because the daughter wants to eat all the time doesn't mean the parents have to let her.If your friend doesn't cut her daughters food intake, she will be opening the door for such diseases as heart disease, hight blood pressure, etc. These are killer diseases. Please tell your friend to lower her food intake with the help of a doctor

Thank you for all your advice, her Mum does put her foot down. We have found friends in school giving her junk food. she has a way of getting around it. I think one big problem is lack of confidence as her sister is skinny and total opposite

Is there exercise programs that mom and daughter can do together? Also, the mom needs to step in and stay no when the daughter wants to overeat. Tell her get rid of all the junk food and sugary drinks, and start a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Also, make sure the daughter is going for regular check ups as there could be an underlying medical disorder.

I see that it's a medical problem already. First of all, they should consult with a dietician. He will probably advise to cut the portions, to make her go in for sports but those she will like, to feed her with more healthy and low-energy food. Good luck!!

Overweight of children is not thier fault. Its the fault of their mother who forgot cooking and depend on fast food.Fast food are junk food without any energy. Avoid such food.Engage them with some regular physical exercise.I think it will help them.

The best thing that she can do is cut her portions back, and change what she eats. Cut out the sugar!!! Thats one of the bigger causes for children being "big".
