powdered lye as opposed to flaked lye: soapmaking sos

i tried my hand in hot-process soap making but it didnt quite work out and now im a bit skeptical to try it again. i used the soapcalc but the only thing is that the lye that could be bought here is in flake form. i checked the constitution and its 98% caustic soda and 2% of something else. im also having a hard time measuring the oils and the lye. i dont have a scale yet so i used calibrated spoons, the one used for baking. i made sure i had the conversions correct. but... oh well. just a bit frustrated.
