Having beliefs

I'm not looking for people to preach their religion to me, so please dont. I've been reading books written by Karen Kingsbury lately. For those of you that don't know, she is an author that writes books about romance, family, etc with a basis around believing in God. (Please correct me if you've read her and I'm wrong).. I absolutely love her books. I went to Sunday school when I was young but when I grew a little older stopped going. I don't go to Church and I don't base my life on the Bible. I do believe in God, and I hope that my belief is true.. but I find myself questioning if he is really there. I know this is going to sound stupid but how do I know he is? I know I should know this and should feel this but I dont. I find myself talking to Him each day and want to know how I should know that He is there? Is he just "there"? Does it happen in real life like it does in the books, where He does answer you in some way or form? I wish I could understand this better. Am I just being ridiculous or are there others out there who feel the same way that I do?

I don't feel you're being ridiculous. I think most of us at some time or another have asked the same question. I know as I grew older I looked back on my life and when I prayed for something and it didn't happen, I noticed that what happened instead was better than what I wanted. To me, that was God answering my prayers knowing that what I wanted wasn't the best for me but the way it turned out was. When I was your age I didn't always see that even though I had a strong belief that there was a God. I felt he didn't listen to me but he did. I hope this doesn't sound like preaching but it's just my own experience.

No, it doesnt sound like you are preaching at all, it is more like the response that I was looking for.. I dont know, just some kind of confirmation that things are going to end up right-- its just hard to understand sometimes.

You aren't being ridiculous at all. I think that God does answer us...but we often miss the answers because they aren't what we expected or wanted the answer to be....and the answer doesn't always come instantaneously. I think it's also possible that we miss the answers because we're too busy with trivial concerns and outside noises and distractions that keep us from hearing His voice when He does call out to us. We live in a world where we've come to expect instant results or gratification so a perceived delay in response by God to our pleas or if the answer we expect isn't always what we get, it can lead to a crisis in faith at times when we feel our prayers are being ignored and going unanswered.
