Where do they find these people?

Wife swap is coming on and as I listen to the introductions and bios of these families, I have to wonder about this. When I watch shows like this, I am amazed at the dysfunction and utter rediculous ways they live. Sometimes I wonder if they are made up for the show. I guess it is just hard for me to comprehend people living the way some of these people do. Spoiled kids, spoiled wives, subservient wives, subservient husbands. I just don't get it. Where is the balance?

I've only seen bits and pieces of "wife swap" so I don't really know just how strange some of these people can be (I never hear their stories at the beginning). Maybe the "Wife Swap" and "Jerry Springer" shows get their guests from the same shows...hehe. I would imagine that the dysfunction of the family is exaggerated for the audiance, it's probably what makes the show a hit.

These are the rejects from the reality shows. Actually, they represent a good crossection of life in America. Sad to say. And it is even sadder to say that this garbage is created here.

I'm watching it now. I can't get over that lady that acts like a princess. She was a little rude, I thought. It was nice that she bought that girl an outfit and stuff. I thought the one girl was spoiled beyond all belief. She was rude at the thrift store. I couldn't get over her attitude.

I really dont understand where or how they find some of the families for these shows. I think some of it is made up if not a lot of it i mean how can a family be that crazy. I mean i do understand spoiled kids and some parents not being able to control there kids and stuff like that, not that its right, but whose to say whats right or wrong i guess.

Yes, most of them need some kind of balance int heir lives. What they do though usually is working for them. Most of them change some what but not alot and usually for the better afterwards. What might be right for some may not be right for others.

Another question I always have is, how can they know they aren't dysfunctional? If I knew I had a dysfunctional family there is no way I would want that fact on national TV. Where is their dignity? That episode with the family who ate raw and rotten meat really had me scratching my head. I knew they were for real because that mom had serious gingivitis from brushing her teeth with butter and clay. Her gum line was bright red! Their whole lifestyle is abusive towards their kids.

You're right. I wondered why they got on the show. Except that the wife said she wanted to get her message out. ANd she was kind of proud of how she "kept" house- I saw her showing the details early on in the show. Can it be that someone approached them and offered them money or something to go on the show? I just can't see them watching tv (munching on a bowl of hot buttered chicken heads, no doubt) and deciding-hey let's us show ourselves on that there show!!?hmm,

I don't think there is a balance. Every family is unique in their own although some are strange, especially on that show. I think the show likes to give people the "shock factor"....it has to be crazy. If it wasn't then they wouldn't have any viewers! I love the show and laugh every week at it.

I must confess, I do watch the show and usually enjoy it. I am not sure why, maybe because it makes me feel normal.

It does make us feel normal doesn't it? I caught last night's episode with the bratty 14 year old girl and the mother who was her "friend"....omg, I couldn't imagine having a kid that spoiled. The dad had never raised his voice to her? That mom was messed up I thought though.

I think it is the weirdness and oddness that brings people to watch the show. After all, if it was normal there would be no point. We love to watch extreme things and this show surely does deliver! It seems like every week they outdo themselves with another weird couple!

You know, i really like the show, i do, its good. But sometimes i cant watch it because people are so extreme! They seem so blasted fake to me sometimes. Do people REALLY live like that?

Oh my absoulte favorite was the woman yelling "I am a CHRISTIAN WOMAN!!!" Remember that one? She was on twice it was so entertaining. There is no balance on this show. Years ago, before the show came on, I was a member of a forum, and there was a post, by a FOX producer looking for wild opinionated women, or is your husband a total male chauvenist pig? If so, respond to this message, FOX producers seeking families to participate in new show....Ahhh explains it all!

well a family friend of ours actually filemed on one of the shows called "trading spouses" they seem to try to find people ove way, then put them with anther family that is the opposite of the person that is being switched. all of this is purely entertainment value until the very end. on trading spouses, the mother that is swapped gets 50,000 to do with what she wants to improve the other family. the only one that i have seen that was actually a sensible spending of the 50 grand was when the mother set up college funds for the kids. also of the episodes that i have seen, only one has been somewhat emotional. it was where the father hugged his kid for the first time. so is it trash or sometimes does it actually have an effect?

I hate wife swap, let me just say. I think they portray women in a really bad light. I never liked that show, ever. Part of me makes me think that these "Reality" tv shows are scripted. Or at least some of them are.

I think the show itself brings out the strangeness in people. Because it only focusses on the part that is very different. I'd never be on a show like that. I think it would be bad for my self esteem.

Last night's episode was one of the worst when it came to the kids. That girl was horribly disrespectful, and instead of correcting the problem, the mother freaked out and couldn't believe people would say anything bad about her precious. Sometimes, I think that is what is wrong with society today. Parents like that coddling their kids, never teaching them responsibility or consequence.
