How Can I Get Her To Shut Up? Please Help.

My cat is about a year old now. She is in heat. How can I get her to stop meowing? Besides spaying and mating her with a male. Because I can't afford to spay her and I don't want little kittens running around. She has kept me awake the past 4 to 5 nights and when I do get to sleep she wakes me up at 4 or 5am. Please give me some suggestions. Thanks in advance

I am sorry to tell you this, but it will not stop until she gets fixed. Please go to the humane society. They will usually be a lot less, if not for free, than the vet.

Yea I guess you're right. I'll call up the humane society and see how much it is. Thanks for responding and letting me know about the low cost spaying.

I have to agree this is the only way to get the cat to stop. Get her fixed ASAP. You can contact your local animal shelter or even your vet they can tell you where to get low or no cost spaying.

I guess you could make a cat run, either outside, if warm enough, that you could put her in at night. Other than that, the only way is go get her desexed. Many city councils offer low cost desexing for low income earners. They may even let you pay it off.

I wish it were warm enough. Right now it's still cold. I'll have to look into desexing her. Thanks for responding

Unfortunately, when female kitties are in heat, there isn't a way to shut them up. The poor things can't help it. Mine drove me up a wall too. As a matter of fact, I just went through two weeks of it. I have 2 outside females that I can't catch to take in and get spayed. When one's heat finished, the other started! Are there any low cost spay and neuter clinics anywhere near you? You might be able to call the local SPCA or animal shelter and find out from them if there are any non profit agencies that might be able to help you out. Good luck....find some earplugs! LOL

I feel so bad for her but there's nothing I can do but spay her in a few weeks. I have 2 indoor cats. I'm sure that I'll have the same case as far as when one finishes the other will start. That's just my luck. The lowest I found is $45. So in a few weeks I will do it. I'll also call the animal shelters and find out if there are anything cheaper. Earplugs would be wonderful. Thanks for responding

They can spay kitties while they are in their heat too. But I think it might be a little more expensive. Ask them at the humane society, or wherever you call. Maybe you can find someone that will charge the same rate no matter what.

I really don't think there is a way to get her to stop. My cat is a few years old and every month or so I have to listen to it continously. I have yet to figure out a way. I just let her go about her business.

I honestly dont think that getting her fixed is going to solve the problem one hundred percent she'll still have other issues from time to time and getting a pet fixed may have its benefits but they arent one hundred percent garunteed to be better all the time for every pet

The only bad part about that is that I live in a pet-free apartment. No pets are allowed and I can't risk the landlord hearing her. Thanks for responding

There is only one way to stop a cat in heat from making a lot of noise - spaying. Even if you can't afford it - save the money to get it done. Find a vet that will help you make payments - tell the vet you can't afford it. Go to the Humane Society and see if they can help. Spaying a pet is the responsible thing to do. She will get out - when you least expect it - and soon enough the kittens will come.

I suppose I should save up and hopefully find one that is affordable. I will try it out. Thanks for responding

Whatever you do, keep her in the apartment so the boys can't get to her! You don't need babies to deal with too! :-)

This might sound kind of sick, but when I worked at the animal hospital the vet told me to rub a q-tip on her private area. I don't know if I'm just crazy or what, but within a few hours she was out of heat.

I agree that the only relief for both the kitty and you would be to have her spayed. I know first hand what it's like to have a vet bill to pay but a lot of clinics are really good about paying, some even allow you to make small monthly payments until it's paid off. Just depends on where you go I suppose. Just remember that vets love animals so they would want to see the right thing happen, that's why they offer these payment plans. Good luck, hope you sleep soon.

Monthly payments would be nice. I will shortly be dealing with two cats in heat. The other girl hasn't started yet. Thank goodness. Thanks and yes I hope I can get a little sleep too.

I have three suggestions for you. First, see if the local Humane Society can help you. Second, try to find a Vet that is willing to take payments. Third, INVEST IN A GOOD PAIR OF EARPLUGS. I hope these hints are helpful.

Yes earplugs. Those are cheap too. Lol. I will check the Humane Society and a vet that takes payments. Thanks for responding

that is a problem.. she wants to do what her instincts are telling her. spaying is about all you can do.. if you call your neighborhhod humane society, they can usually hook you up with someone to help get her spayed for less money.. believe me it is well worth it..

I'm sure spaying is well worth it. I could sleep uninterrupted and she wouldn't be pregnant. She would probably feel better too. Thanks for responding

She is calling because she is in season - it is totally normal, and instintive, and there is NO WAY she will be quiet unless you get her spayed. It is not her fault - she cannot help it. In the UK, there are charities, shelters, and societies that will spay pets for people who are unemplpyed or on low incomes, because the alternative is unwanted kittens, or abandoned, sick cats. Don't you have similar schemes in the Sates? Or parhaps a Vet would let you pay for the operation in instalments? Or maybe you could borrow the money from someone? There really is no other solution for the poor little mite.

I know it's not her fault. I know she can't help it at all. It's in her instinct. Too bad I don't live in the UK. There are so many good benefits to living there. We do have a similar thing, but to get her spayed for free is over an hour away. So I found a place that will do it for $45. I'll have to talk to the vet about installments but I'll probably wait a few weeks because I will be starting a new job hopefully by the 5th of March. Thanks for responding

I know it sounds bad, but the vet said it would work so I tried it and it did. Give her a cold shower. really. put her in the shower (if you have a glass one it is even better) and turn on the water full blast and very cold. She will stop for the rest of the night. More than one vet suggested this, so I know it is ok.

Ya know. I thought about that. I didn't know if it would work or not so I didn't do it. Now that you've told me then I will try it tomorrow night. It's too late tonight. Thanks for the great suggestion.

Most animal welfare organisations run spaying and neutering programmes and many of these are free or at a low cost. It might be a good idea to get your cat spayed soon, partly so you avoid the risk of kittens and partly so you can sleep at night :-) Contact your local animal charity and see if they can help you

It would be a great idea to spay her as soon as I can. No babies and nice sleep. I will contact the animal organizations in my area. Thanks for responding

She will stop in a few days. Until then you need to just put up with it. Contact your local SPCA as soon as she is out of heat...a lot of times they will do low cost spays or put you in contact with a vet that will do low cost spays. There are some vets who will do spays while the cat is in heat, but it's more expensive. She needs to be spayed. That is the only way you will stop this behaviour and you do not want to contribute to the problem of overpopulation of animals.

I hope so. I will check to see what the SPCA offers. I don't want her to be in heat while she is being spayed. That would be too confusing for her. At least I think it would. No I don't want to overpopulate the earth with little kitties. Thanks for responding

If you live in the UK and are on benefits you can get your cat spayed for free at PDSA. If you're not on benefits then surely you can afford the samll cost of getting this done?

Wow, I'm in the exact same situation! After reading the replies, I guess I know what I should do :) She's 5 already and has always been indoors but she drives us nuts when she's in heat! We just haven't wanted to spend the extra money to have her fixed... I know we should. Maybe I'll give them a call and find out how much it will cost.

Wow. That's weird. I know what I should do too. I don't think I could put up with that for 5 years. Since I have two cats it would be like 10 years. lol. It really isn't that expensive to fix the cats in my area. So I'll be getting them both fixed as soon as I get the extra money. Thanks for responding and good luck on getting her fixed.

There's nothing you can do that is part of a cat's nature. Maybe you can find a cheaper vet.

You can't stop nature. No matter how bad you want to. During the day she is much quieter. I wish it were the other way around. I'll check into a cheaper vet. Thanks for responding

From my opinion, there a reason why you having a pet right :) we know that animal have their own nature which we cannot force it to change, it will affect the cat nature itself. I think for the case, it just a few days only, after that it will be normal again. Anyway, it's something good for having a kitten right :) just let the nature goes...

Yes there's a reason I have pets. I love pets. So far I'm in my 5th or 6th day of this. Then it will come back in 2 to 3 weeks many times a year. I will try to let the nature take it's course. It's just so hard. It's almost like I've had a baby and it keeps me up crying all night. Thanks for responding

well, since you thrown out the only 2 solutions to make the cat stop her moaning, then you are just going to have to live with it. currently all 5 of my female felines are going through the same thing, being as it is almost spring. but the tom cats are taking care of it. since it has been 4-5 days already, you will be drawing to the end of her craving sometime next weak. but pebbles, you need to save up the money for a spaying operation, because she will go throught this again in the early fall and then again next spring, and so on. i think the humane society does spaying, but im not sure. just save up some money and get it done as soon as possible or else find some way to mute the cat!

o and i read someone elses saying to put her outside. DONT!!! she will start calling! and you said you dont want kittens! keep her indoors otherwise some strange males will come around, because here, in addition to our 2 permanet toms, we got 2 strays to snooping around the farm. wait, i got a thought, what if you find a male FIXED tom? do they still mate? i know fixed dogs do, but do cats? maybe if a fixed male "takes care of" you girlie, then all will be well and then you wont have to pay for surgery.

Yep. Very difficult. Now the other one has started in. Right now I don't think I could afford to get her a male since that means babies. I would want to keep all the kittens. Thanks for responding.

I don't know how things work where you are from but tomoorow is supposed to be a nationwide spay/neuter your pets day. Here you can fix your pets for 5 cents. You may want to check if your city has a S.N.A.P. program. Thay usually spay/neuter for free based on your income. Check with your local vet. I am sure they can help you.
