It's both. I suck my thumb because, well, sometimes it's just automatic, like when I go to sleep, other times it's 'cause I like to, when watching TV for instance, or driving my car. It feels good, is legal, convenient and, most of all, VERY calming.

My baby doing it from she knows she have her fingers. I think (for baby) they do it if they hungry or for fun *for teething. Hope she will stop when she grew up!
