What is a non-parole period?

I know that 'non-parole period' is a legal term, but can someone please give a good definition? Thanks! :)

Every prisoner at some time can apply for a shorter gaol term for good behaviour a non-parole perios I think is the amount of time a prisoner must serve before he can put in an application for parole....maybe.
