Programs to prevent homelessness

I am shocked to find out that, when looking for programs to prevent someone from becoming homeless, they are few and far between, and the ones that are in place have so many rules and regulations that it is impossible to receive the help that is supposed to be in place to prevent loosing your home. Two such programs One from the Welfare program, states that they will help you with eviction or relocation but then stipulates, that you must prove basically how you are going to pay future payments, most people who are applying are without current funds and cannot prove this so what are they to do. Another program is through the HUD agency who says they are there to help prevent homelessness, but when some people have applied or asked for help they are turned down, because of previous housing issues that have happened due to no fault of there own. I understand that there are some people who do abuse the system, but does that make it fair to prevent others from receiving help, it shouldn't but it does. I understand now why some people become homeless, it is not because they want to be, but because the programs that are in place to prevent this, are not working the correct ways. What type of help if any is in your state to prevent homelessness, and have you ever researched how they work?

I haven't done a lot of research, but I did try to help someone who was homeless, and I could not get any help for her at all. Even Social Services wanted my husbands income, because I let this child stay in my home until she found something. She was 19 at the time, 3 months pregnant and her husband had been killed in a drive by shooting. All she had with her was a grocery bag with a few old clothes in it. Her shoes did not even fit her. I called to get help for her, but there was no one that wanted to help. She stayed with us until after the baby was born, and now she is back on her feet. I think it is a shame that their was no help for her. I have paid my taxes for a very long time, and it scares me to think that if something happened where I was facing homelessness, there would be no help available. Something should be done, but how?

It is a shame that the so called social services do not help like they are supposed to, one agency will offer 5 or 10 dollars towards payment of something that could be in the thousands and then send you on your way and tell you to try somewhere else. What are people to do who come from depressed areas or small towns and there is no where else to turn, they face having utilities turned off or evicted from there homes. We need something in place that actually works for them not turns them away. Thank you for responding.

Yes we do need programs in place, but programs that are acutally going to work to prevent this, not programs that sit there and do nothing but critize the person for there situation that they are currently in. I realize that there are some that abuse the system but not all do, and we need the programs to work for them. Thank you for responding.
