Why do goldfish never die?

I've been running a five gallon tank for almost a year for the sake of a goldfish my daughter won at a local fair last summer. What is their life expectancy?

Some of them can live for years I'm sorry to say. I have known them to live for five or more years sometimes.

Well, you know the big fancy ones you see in the pet stores? Those take about 4-7 years to get to that size, if that tells you anything. Those fair goldfish are notorious for either dying within 48 hours or living long so long that the winner has to "will" it to a family member when they go to college. We presently have a fancy goldfish that is at least 3 years old, which is the longest I've owned one.
