How do you wear out your dog?

I've got a 4 month old Lab that is full of energy! We try to wear him out during the day so that he'll be more calm in the evening. What sorts of things do you do with your dog to wear them out?

We had a pool so we would play catch in the pool. She also swam laps with me hiked with me. She also liked to chase ice on the lake when it was frozen.

beware that swimming in lakes sometimes leaves them smelling like fish. At least mine did. The park and fetch should wear them out also but the pool build big honking muscle at the same time. My Springer could jump to the top of the five foot fence around our pool and push off and clear the four feet into the pool. If I didn't know she was a pure bred I would have though she was part reviver with all the energy she had. BTW thanks for the best comment:)

There used to be a pool at our house, I wish we still had it! This sounds like fun, especially since my Lab loves the water. I'll have to see if I can find somewhere we can do this. Sounds like lots you and your dog had lots of fun!

I often go jogging with my year old lab, a good 10 km run tires her down to have a good sleep at night, but that may be too much for a 4 month old, though, 2 or 3 km might do, just keep a good eye at him, don't let him overdo it.

That is a wonderful suggestion, and it should wear us out, too! :) Not only that, but the exercise we're getting, and the dogs are getting, is healthy. Thanks so much!

The dog have big skin so they doesn't need to wear anything.

Oops! I meant "wear out" to mean "make exhausted" or "tire out". So they will sleep good at night.

We have 2 huskies. They have a lot of energy. They each require 6 miles a day. Labs don't tire out till they are 4 years old, especially a black one. I used to own a black one and never seemed to tire. Have you tried jogging with your pup? Do you have an outside run? Get a walkie belt and go for a jog.

Yikes, 4 years? He is our first Lab, and we're learning the Lab game as we go along. I've not tried jogging, but that is an excellent idea! I'm sure he'd enjoy it, thanks for the suggestion.

When my friend's golden retriever was younger, the vet recommended a doggie day care. She got to go play all day with other dogs and was completely worn out at night! She went three days a week. They can be expensive, though. I did notice that my local PetSmart was starting a doggie day care, but my dogs are older so I haven't been to check it out.

Good suggestion! Our vet has a doggy daycare that we'll be trying out soon. I've heard such great things about daycare, too... The dogs get so worn out, they don't move! LOL. I wouldn't mind that sometimes! They can be expensive, I agree. I guess it depends on how happy the dog(s) are when returning home, and if they really seem to get something out of it. I think at the very least, it's worth a try! Depending on the age of your dogs, I understand that some doggy daycares can meet the needs of older dogs. Might be something worth looking into, if you think your dogs can benefit.

Thats a very good question that I am actually still trying to find an answer for!! The only thing I have found that works, is walking him or her a couple times a day. If you make the walks as long as you possibly can, I know that it works. At least it does for mine. When there is snow on the ground, we let ours play in it. That also seems to help wear her out because she uses so much energy jumping in and out of snow piles.

HAHAHA. Now the humor bug has hit. Do you ever wear your dog out when you go out to dinner? The movies? Isn't he heavy when you wear him? Does he just lay still as you wear him out? I could go on forever but I'll stop. Im litterally going to "P" my pants if I don't stop. HAHAHAHAHA!!!!! Happy postings from Grandpa Bob.

I've a Beagle mix. Check out the pics I have on my page. He's adorable. He gets tired out a lot around here. As I mentioned he loves the snow. As part Beagle he is naturally active as heck. I chase him around the yard with his tennis balls till he doesn't chase them anymore. Happy postings from Grandpa Bob.
