Question is tricky though it seems to be simple. Emily is 4 years old. Her sister is 12 years old. After some time Emily will be 4+Y and her sister will be 12+Y. IF 2x(4+Y) = 12+Y 8 + 2Y = 12 + Y Y = 4 It is after 4 years that this happens. So after 4 years Amy will be 16 years old.

In four years time Amy will be 16 and Emily will be 8, so the answer is obviously 16.
