My Thoughts on Taxation

As a follow up to the My Thoughts on Law and Order thread I thought I would post my thoughts on a fair taxation system. First off I think income tax should be eliminated entirely. It is an unnecessary burden on the people and the government. A more logical system is a sales/luxury tax. Not a straight taxation such as most regions use now, but a sliding scale, the more unnecessary an item is for basic survival the higher the tax. Take cars for example, all cars are a luxury, you don't NEED a vehicle to survive, but it is close to a necessity in these days, as such the basic rate for cars should be low. That being said no one NEEDS a gas guzzling SUV, they are bad for the environment. Basically a sliding scale based on gas mileage and emissions would be the way to go. A hybrid economy car would have a much lower income tax rate then a Hummer in this situation. For food, most food would have zero sales tax, but the higher fat content food, and foods that are generally unhealthy such as high caloric value with little to no nutritional value should have some tax value. Alcohol, tobacco, and other substances for entertainment alone should have quite high taxes. Sure this is a complex system, but it shouldn't be that hard to actually implement. It would require that people using old cash registers would have to go to computerized systems, but really why aren't they already.
