Which Christian music is best: contemporary or old-fashioned? Why?

In attending both traditional and contemporary services, I have found I really like the old-fashioned hymns better than much of the contemporary music. With few exceptions I find the modern music repetitive, short on meaningful lyrics, poorly written and too loud! I admit I am an older woman and thus probably very prejudiced. I would like to hear what others of all ages think, however.

I would love to ask your age, but that may be too personal. I have found that younger people tend to prefer the contemporary, while older people, the traditional. Guess it depends what you were brought up on. Thanks for the reply!

I prefer the contemporary Christian. i like the up beat tempo of it. It is all good as it praises our lord, but we all have our own preferences and this mine. I am not young but spend a lot of time with teens and pre-teens so maybe it keeps me feeling younger!?

I personally love both. I love praise and worship music, I love praising God. But I also love the lyric of a lot of the old hymnals. They are very anoited and meaniful. I would like to find out the people who wrote these lyrics and find out why they wrote them, what compelled them to write the words that they wrote. They are awesome!

I grew up with very old fashioned hymns that at the time sounded very mournful, and a bit scarey, I joined the Salvation Army as a teenager and loved the band music and cheerful songs and hymns. As an adult I started going to the Anglican church and started singing in the choir which I loved, the songs and hymns were new and bubbly, now going to one of the more modern life centres with my grandchildren I now love to hear the young people into their 'christian rock'. My opinion is that it is all God's music and I don't think he favours one over the other as we are worshipping him.

I normally prefer contemporary christian music. But there are a couple of the old-fashioned ones that I like to. I love the "I'll fly away" hymn and I think that the group Jars of Clay remade it and I love that version of it too. But mainly I listen to what is referred to as today's christian music on the radio station air one.
