When do babies start crawling?

My baby is 5 months old now. He can get onto his tummy now and prop himself on his elbows. He manages to wiggle around and actually move a little bit, but only about a foot. I'm wondering when do babies generally start actually crawling?

Your doctor should have provided a chart of the general advances you should see over time. If not you can probably pick up some leaflets from him or the health center. But there is no hard and fast time for them to get going. Some are content to just stay in one place for longer! If I were you I would revel in the time you have when they stay where you put them :o)

It sounds like your baby is fairly on target. The problem with really knowing is that babies will do their own thing on their own time. Ask your doctor about milestones, but I don't think you have much to worry about from the sounds of it. My daughter began rolling over and was able to sit up for short periods of time at around 5 months. She began crawling around 6 months and pulling herself up to a standing position between 10 and 11 months. But, don't fall into the trap of comparing your child other children you hear about. It just doesn't work that way. Good luck!

My children started crawling around five to six months old.My youngest was trying to crawl at five months but did not actually start until she was six months. Two days later she was walking the couches. All children are different though. Before you know it your little one will be all over the place.

My son started crawling at 7 months and walking by 8. My daughter is 6 months and she is scooting a little on her tummy.
