Are You a Prolific Writer or Do You Take Your Time With Each Piece ?

I admit when it comes to writing I am slow at it. I like to look deeply into things and try to find a new avenue to tell a story often told many times before. It's a road, beaten by many mouths before my time which makes it so deliciously challenging. But I envy those writers who can spin off ten complete books in the span of 2 to 3 years. That's amazing. Not knowing many prolific writers myself I got curious; Are you a prolific type of writer on a mission and quantity is your best friend (ex: Guinness book of Records) ? or Do you drop time closer to the bottom of your priority list, letting some other hand of fate guide you to finish your piece ?

I definately drop time closer to the bottom of my priority list. the biggest problem I have is that I am way too picky about my writing. I tend to get caught up nitpicking and trying to rewrite and get it perfect before I move on. I know that as a writer you should just write and not worry about errors or if it is good enough at first so you can finish the whole thing and then go back and rewrite the entire thing until it is just right, but I am horrible at that. I wonder about the people on AssociatedContent who can pump out article after article, because I even have trouble with that and end up spending way more time than what equals the pay I will get. I am reading some ebooks andother online information about how to write quickly and I have even once taken part in 24 hour writing contest, but I have yet to master this skill. I will not give up because I really want to write more but the quality has to be there also.

You know the 24 hour contest I took part in was ages ago, but it sure was fun. I had to be online at a certain time and they would then give the topic and you had 24 hours to wirte a short story ans get it submitted. I didn't win but it was a blast. Anyways, I did a quick search and came up with one that is taking place in April. Here is the link. http://www.writersweekly.com/misc/contest.php I bet you couls find more with a more detailed search. I think I may have to give this one a try too.

I write really slowly. I like to read over what I've written and make sure that it flows well and fix any errors. It takes a lot more time but I think that it will finish with a lot more quality than if I rushed it.

I spend a lot of time on articles that I write, even when it's not for money. I always wonder how people write 4-5 or more articles a day for Associated Content. I am lucky if I can get one out every other day (my goal at the present moment, and I can tell you I am behind). I am not sure if those folks are just filled with ideas or have a wide range of knowledge, but don't they ever need to do any research beforehand? So, for me, time is never on my side in the pursuit of a well written piece.

I am not a prolific writer and in fact not a writer at all so to say. I just compile and it's also very difficult to compile. Some of my books are published and found at http://www.lulu.com/donedwinjoaquin

Very prolific, but I've got very fussy with experience. "Quantity for the sake of quantity" just doesn't work. Quality and cohesion do matter, and speed without looking where you're going is not recommended. I wrote 6000+ words in four hours a couple of days ago, a short story. There were five typos and three pars that had to be rewritten. The story is in reasonably good condition, and although it might need some additions, I have a workable version of the text to play with. My view is that I have to read it, too, so it better be worth reading. I try to be ruthless with anything that's not up to scratch. To me, the problem with slow writing is that while it allows for reflection, it's tough on quantity. Even the skeleton of a story takes time, and doing original work, you need to be able to see the whole thing to get a decent look at it. It's hard to criticize something that isn't yet written, or see how it works. In the name of consistency, a draft version has a lot to be said for it. Any howling gaps in the text will show at that stage.

I'm a pretty fast writer, actually..to me it feels slow..but comparitively I guess I go fairly fast. I've written a book (not too thick but not too thin) in three months. My editor's estimated that I could write a thick one if I was left in a room with my computer for five days undisturbed. It's 'cause I seem to be running on a high creativity/inspiration wise..I always have. It takes forever to wear my brain out enough to feel tired. It's both good and bad for me, since I neglect my own physical needs and my social life because I'll turn my focus purely on my writing, forgetting everything else. But people like what I write so..*shrugs* I go for both quantity and quality. I'll never let anyone see anything story-wise that I don't think is perfect, or at least acceptable. I'm obsessive like that..I'll work and work on it, til I feel I finally got it right or as right as I could possibly get it at. I'm not bragging..I feel like crap half the time 'cause of my writing habits lol..but I feel like happy crap because it's something I love doing.

it really depends. sometimes, it takes me a while to concentrate on a topic, especially when i have a lot going in my mind. other times, my fingers just flow effortless on the keyboard.

For me, it really depends on the piece and it really depends on what kind of statement I'm trying to make with that piece. Sometimes I can sit and knock it out so fast and it turns out to be an excellent piece. I mean, I don't like spending way too much time on something, especially if I know I'll ruin it.

I'm quite a prolific writer. I use writing as a stress reliever, to figure out big decisions, a time killer and most everything else.. LOL.. I tend to write like I talk and believe me it's alot and quite fast. I find that if I'm using the computer I tend to use a spellcheck or go back and correct mistakes so that the spellcheck won't get them but if I'm writing with an actual pen and paper I just write what comes out and go back to fix it up later.

I am a bit lazy - but when the words come they are like a hail storm of activity - typing at 90 wpm with my thoughts racing faster then my fingers can go!

I'd recommend writing quickly. Sometimes when you take "forever" on a piece, you lose interest and the work suffers. I've heard of some classic writers writing their novels in less than one month.

Some days i can write a lot and some days i just cant put in a single straight sentence. I think I am a spontaneous writer, cant really frame words or think a lot about a situation and write, most of the times its an instant response to what i read, hear or understand. I guess thats why i have never written a book, dont think i have it in me to write something so long consistently.

I would love to help all here! I do not let quantity rule my words-a big mistake-common among new or first time authors. I have been a writer for more than 20 yrs-(fiction) and i have mentored people all the way. I hear the same problems from just about every one i have helped and that is why i have been here testing my new course. i am not trying to get you to buy it i just want your oppinion that if you knew it would break you out of your shell and truly help would you pay $10.00 to get it. I think i need feed back because these are the same things i have been teaching through out my career for free and now i'm trying to sell the course. By the way I am one of those writers that spins out 2-3 books a year! I know noone wants to believe me but it's true. my last book that i just landed a publishing contract with-took me 21 days to write. And according to market analysis which rates everything from story quality to readability to marketability on a scale of 0-10 ten being the best-like Mr.King-i got a 9.8..my first novel recieved a 9.5 my agent told me that was unheard of for at that time an unknown author. my 2cd novel came in at a 9.9 so now i have one in production and another in the works plus a nice resume of accomplishments. I am here to help!!

I would love to be able to say that I am a prolific writer. Alas, I cannot. I take me time with everything. I'm a bit of a perfectionist. If I am working on a story, I want it to come across exactly right. Every little thing needs to be thought through, and often changed about a dozen times in order to get just the right balance, mood, and tone. As a result of this mindset, I can take a very long time to complete a story. Now, poetry, for me, is different. When I write poetry, it is usually very quick and the first draft is the only draft. But, that's because I take a vastly different approach to poetry. Poetry, to me, is pure emotion and soul spilling out onto the page. So, if I'm feeling something that I need to verbally spew out onto the page, whatever comes out is it. Mission accomplished. Stories though, they are just different. A professor once said (and I have to agree with him) "A story is never finished, it's just due."

well i think writing needs time if you want to really really come up with a great piece of work in many days and if it is like you just want a piece of work and the quality should be medium then you can give it a go without much thinking . personally i like to sit down alone and make a good writing .

I am one of those writers that writes as fast as it will come out of me. Sometimes a piece can take months and other hours. I have many poems still unfinished. However this is not to say that I dont take care with everything I write. Wrtiting is something I love, the thing that drives me creativly speaking so I take great care with everything that I write. I dont know if i would say that I was prolific but then again half the time i over critical of myself so i will leave that to the public to judge.

Honestly, it depends on what I am writing. I tend to write fairly fast most of the time, like here on myLot. If I agonized over every word on here, I'd never make any money. ;) But, if I'm writing an article on something I really care about, I'll take my time and reread it and revise it until I'm happy. A lot of it has to do with my intended audience as well. If I know they will be expecting high quality, I will spend more time making sure I am providing it.
