Do you use online storage services?

I know we have our good old hard disks to store our data, our mp3s, our photos, and what have you. But what happens if our PC fails us and all this precious bytes are lost? Do you you backup devices like zipdrives, thumbdrives, etc? Or do you rely on online storage services? Take a look at http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1697,2099014,00.asp that gives a preview of 6 FREE storage services. Namely, they are: * box.net * DropBoks * eSnips * MediaMax * OmniDrive * openomy Have you tried or are you now relying on one or more of the above? They are free and provides lots of space for you. Do share your thoughts on this issue. ;-)

Online Storage ?? OH NO !! with my current internet connection speed it will take a whole day to upload 500MB data. I Prefer to burn it on a CD :-).

Haha, you brought up a very valid point. It seems that online storage is still restricted to those who have fast enough internet connection. In fact, depending on the site, even if your internet connection is first, you might not be allowed a fast enough uploading speed for your taste! :P

Urghh... I forgot one thing. I will backup some important files (but the size is under 10MB) in my yahoo email. at least I don't have to worry about when they will shut down their service :-)

Yup, it would depend on how paranoid you are, or rather, how important the documents are. If they are critical, it doesn't hurt to store them in more than a few places.

online storage i think is nice but still i think it is better to keep the back up with us. suppose that we need the backup and the site is down then what can we do. also if the databse is corrupted then we have nothing to do. and let me tell you, when bad things happen with u they tend to come all at one time so dnt u totally depend on them. yes for fast access they are nice. like if u want a file to be send to some one then u can use those things and then they really come in handy like rapidshare.

I would rather use e.g. www.divshare.com . :P Rapidshare is fast? I don't find it rapid when I have to wait 60 sec or so for free downloading. :PP

Do consider getting an external hard disk - the capacity is way bigger than a tiny thumbdrive, yet it still affords you that affordability. So store those info (and the programs) you are not going to move in your old hard disk - and save those you want to move (e.g. music and photos) in the new external hard disk. Just a suggestion. ;-)

Considered webshots or flick? I understand both are quite popular among those who store photos online.

For pictures I recommend these sites. Share a picture. http://www.shareapic.net/ref.php?owner=DNatureofDTrain Not only can you store your pictures and upload as many as you want to for free, but you can also hot link to them from anywhere, I also recommend http://www.care2.com they will let you upload 200 pictures any 30 days.. and keep doing so as the months go on.... then email them to yourself in a web account. AND burn them onto a disk.. and if you even have more time, print them out and put them into an album. - DNatureofDTrain

After losing everything on my hard drive I learned the hard way about storing things on not only a Zip drive but to a website. I am also looking into a 2 gig jump drive to store things on when I go back and forth from home to my shop but that is just for common everyday things. If you don't back up your data you really do need to think about it. Someone said, "It isn't a matter of if your hard drive will fail, but rather when it will fail". I always laughed at that thinking it would never happen to me ... but it did. Thanks for listing the free sites, I am going to look into them as a back up to my back up LOL

You are right, man. It isn't if your hard drive will fail, but rather when it will fail". For me, I am still relying on backuping to email because what I need to secure is relatively small.

It's hard to imagine how devastating it is for your hard drive to fail until it actually happens. And what you should know is that it's much more than a small inconvenience having to reload your operating system (and drivers, unless yours is proprietary), your applications, your files, and your settings piece by piece upon replacing your hard drive. Years ago, when I was still a bit naive about the danger on the Internet, I downloaded and installed some software I'd wanted off of Kazaa. It was a virus, and it immediately wiped out my MBR. Rather than waste my time with recovery console, I reloaded Windows and started from scratch. It took me a good while before I had everything back the way I wanted it, and I longed for a way to back up and restore everything in a single shot. The answer was Acronis True Image. You might want to look into it. As you know, just like a heart is only good for so many beats, a HDD spindle is only good for so many spins. And it can prove useful in other instances as well. The first time I'd ever backed up my grandma's machine was just a month before the big pandemic of October with SQL Slammer and Stack Bot. It didn't matter how long she was online, or where she went; these suckers would come along and punch right through her firewall. One of the first things IRC Flood did was kill System Restore, so I was stuck with scanning. The first time I tried to disinfect, Windows Logon was crippled, and her OS was inoperable. My grandma keeps everything on her computer, including her Quicken checkbook, and her AnyTime address book. And it just so happens that she misplaced the recovery discs for her system long ago. Had it not been for the DVDs I'd created only a month prior, she would have lost it all.

Not a bad idea to use online storage services, provided the site is fast and reliable and the downtime is practically zero. For ease of accessibility since I was practically out of office daily, I backup some important files in emails (from different providers too just in case) and guess what! Both sites were down when I needed it. Now, I still continue with the email backups, but I do carry a thumbdrive for my important files. It is still more secured carrying an external drive :P

I do not use any of the storage websites that you mentioned but I do use the one provided by my cable internet company, Comcast. I store music and photos on there in just in case something happens to my computer or hard drive. I also keep backups on cd-r's and cd-rw's as well. It is always good to make backups of any kind, whether using cds, flashdrives or online storage services.

Backing up your data is ALWAYS a good idea, but I do not trust any of these websites with my information.

Although it will be to our advantage if we avail of these free storage services, it is always advisable that backups will include dvd copies and hard copies of the important documents and items which you have stored. One can never tell when the computer will fail. Another problem is, there is always a risk of losing the computer to some elements like catastrophes, theft, and the like. Yes, I understand that the data you stored may still be retrieved after having another computer running, but it is better to be prepared for the unpredictable.

I am not one of the habitual users of online storage service. I use 4shared.com for keeping files online which i want to share and those are mostly official files. For private reasons I use Gmail Drive, the unused space in Gmail. But i do not use it as a substitute of my backup rather i supplement it. i use a spare HDD to backup my valuable files. Moreover, one cannot upload sensitive or confidential files online for explicit reasons.

I use yahoo to store my most important stuff. They have 2gig of email storage and 300 meg of file storage in thier briefcase as well as unlimited photo storage. I have never lost a thing either. They have been around since the beginning of the internet boom and won't be going out of business anytime soon. Every hardware device I have tried has eventually failed. I had an online storage service go broke. Few people take yahoo seriously but I can tell you it is trustworthy.

I just want to advise you to be careful with yahoo... I have had a few accounts deleted because of inactivity - or rather the accounts were not deleted but deactivated - with all your emails (and thus backups) lost.

I don't like trusting that having all of my files stored on my computer or on my site is completely safe. I have a bunch of thumbdrives to hold backups of my music and site files. I'm looking into purchasing an external drive for this purpose as well. Right now I use Fileshare to store my backup copies of media files and I use sites like photobucket to host my directlinkable images (like signatures and icons) rahter than wasting my own bandwidth. Recently I signd up with Flickr and I'm hosting all of my photos there.

Hey I have never tried online storage places. And I don't wanna store my data online, no matter how safe and secure there. But the chances of Hard Disk Failure are always exist. Rather I go for Zip Drive for small amount of Data. But the way i choose to protect my data from damage is not to store the data on the root drive of the OS and I have a Hard Drive Monitoring Tool, which gives me time to time status report of my hard Disks.

Try to use Divshare.com: -upload unlimited files (200MB max size, quite good, I think) -unlimited downloads -very fast -simple -on-line forever (yes...it's a bit extreme) -direct link to embed file (for example image for your site or blog) You can also get a free account, with a little more options (like private files) I've tried it, and everything has gone very well (for now). In my opinion, free on-line storage service are just one possibility. They are very useful if you have to access them from anywhere, at any time. But nothing is forever, nothing is secure at all. If you have something really important, backup it in three different places (your main Hard disk, an external hd, a pen drive or also a CD/DVD).

I would suggest you encrypt the files with a strong password before uploading confidential documents there.

Yes, I have been used some websites to store my files and softwares. Since Hotmail has a Skydrive service now, I take advantage of it. I found it's very convenient as my main email account is Hotmail. And it offers a very large online storage service and I am quite satisfied with it. I love China

I use thumb drives and smart cards, and for online services for storing my pics I use snapfish. I've lost way to many pictures over the years by not having a back up system, that I now use these type of things for back up.
