Generally, horses who are just turned out to pasture don't have shoes. It is horses who are either racing, roping, barrel racing, or just being ridden that wear shoes. This is for grip. Shoes help them to get a good grip on the ground to help their balance and speed.

I just wanted to say that you really do think of brilliant questions and even though you don't get as many responses as you deserve - I think your brilliant lol. And as for the "WARE" it is spelled wear and it is our poor pronunciation that makes us Scot's spell so many words wrong. Lol.

Aww thanks. I used to be good at spelling in school but it's gone right down hill recently, I think its because of sloppy writing in emails and texts. I could have gone into word to have found it out but couldnt be bothered.

Interesting question, I think it's because horses are the main animal that is ridden by humans, so they need their feet protected mainly when you ride them over rough terrain, can you imagine what would happen to their feet if they didn't have shoes on? Their poor feet would get cut to ribbons on rocky ground. It's mainly for protection. Camels don't need them even though people ride them, the terrain for camels is sand, and sand won't hurt their feet, well that's the way I look at it!

Perhaps that is the case, but what about dogs, they sometimes walk over rough terrain and broken glass etc, we dont ride them but they must still get sore feet?

Most likely because humans have used them as beast of labour and burden. We put ploughs on an ox for example. Leashes on dogs to better control them etc.
