Major racism

United States

I live in NJ where their is a lot of racism going around towards latinos. I just heard on the news that a neighbor town had highschool students playing a game called"find the illegal immigrant". Ive had good close friends of mine get beat up for being latinos. I have overheard the term "dirty spiks" used in my school multiple times. On the side of the wall in bold letters it says" ticos are b&t#$ which offends me because I am a costa rican. This needs to be stopped but what can I do?

This is horrible, and I'm sorry that you have to deal with it. You're right, this does need to be stopped; however there is not much that you can "do" about it yourself. Please don't sink to their level and resort to violence or destruction of property. Hold your head high and be proud of who you are as a person. You are not illegal, and I would bet that most of the latinos in your area are not illegal, either. Take advantage of what the educational system in this country has to offer you and stay out of trouble. These people are racist bigots, and they exist everywhere. A few years ago these same ignorant people were most likely targeting the African Americans, and they have probably done the same to homosexuals and AIDS patients. This type of person targets any minority and spreads their toxic hate around. Maybe you could join an activist group in the community- many churches and community centers have places for latinos to unite and form legal coalitions that showcase their accomplishments and successes in the community and help to combat discrimination. Be better than they are. Remember to be safe; don't go out alone or be somewhere where you are a target for hate crimes. Always have a friend with you at night or if you are walking somewhere. It suc*s, but you have to think of your own personal protection. Good Luck, and stay proud of who you are.

Thanks for your ideas and you are right, I will never resort to violence. I understand its just some words and they mean nothing but deep down they hurt and I wish somebody could stop this.
