Quick tip for baking in a hurry?

I was up this morning getting the kids' breakfast together when I realized I hadn't "preheated" the oven for the croissants I was going to bake them. I needed the oven to be preheated and ready at 350F but in order to do that AND have them baked in time I had to figure out how to heat that oven up quick. DUH. Others will probably go.. Um.... DUH... you didn't think of this before? LOL BUT... to preheat it I turned it to BROIL (hottest temp available) which heats up quickly. For a mere few minutes of heat time I could put the temp back down to 350F and it was there and adjusted quickly! Voila. Hot, fresh baked croissants for the kiddies this morning!

As a cook I have done this for years, but you are right most people don't think about doing it. Use a thermomater though for some things so your oven doesn't get too hot

I do that quite often. It is an easy way to heat it up fast and alot of times I do things the last minute.

When I am whipping up something in the oven like a baked goodie I will use my toaster oven. It heats up very quickly. I love my toaster oven. The next one I purchase will be a convection type.

See, I had a toaster oven and rarely used it. My parents use theirs all the time to make toast in and to me it's so much slower for that along with just not quite the same as a toaster. The toast gets hard or something. Then again I have 4 of us to feed and usually at least 1 or 2 of their friends so a toaster oven would have to be the size of a small house to do me any good at this point in my life! LOL Perhaps when I'm by myself (IN AK!!!!!!! LOL) I will think about that. I've often wondered about convection ovens and how they work!

Oh my gosh, I would never have thought of that! lol! So it heats it up quicker when you turn it to broil, huh? My hubby is terrible about not preheating the oven! Then he'll complain when the food does not turn out right....

Yeah, I was kind of amazed at the whole thing too and just figured heck heating up is heating up but something about the broiler makes it super hot almost instantly! My oven is electric but I'm certain it would be the same for gas too.

Ooooh... thank you so much! LOL I thought I was just super slow! LMAO It's a great way to get the oven up there at the right temp in a hurry... just don't forget to put it back down or you'll be eating charcoal!

Great idea, thanks for the tip. Also, make a lot of things ahead, or more of it when you cook and bake. Freeze everything. Then you can put it into the micro and have it in two minutes.

This is something I have done. I have also completely skipped preheating and just baked a little longer watching carefully.
