Subtitled movies? Do you avoid them or like them?

I've had people tell me that they won't watch movies in foreign languages because they don't like to read subtitles. Do you think reading subtitles would spoil your enjoyment of a movie?

I try to avoid them if I can however they do not ruin the movie...and sometimes there are movies one just has to see with subtitles...like PAN'S LABYRINTH, BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF, and DISTRICT B13 ..all of those are awesome

District B13 was the one I had to watch dubbed. Too much going on on the screen for me to keep up if I was reading. The dubbing was pretty awful, but the dialogue wasn't much, so I decided to just ignore it and concentrate on the action.

I am fine with subtitles, they really don't bother me at all lol. I watch a lot of Kung Fu movies so I like to understand what it is all about, even if the translation can be a bit dodgy lol. But now I am learning Chinese, I can recognize some of the words and it is getting to be much more fun for me, It is helping me to learn the language in a fun way.

Id rather wathed a subtitled movie than a dubbed one.I also like to hear the actors voice when he deliver a dialogue,it can make or break a film, the delivery of the lines and the emotions or lack of it.

Even when dubbing is available I'd rather read the subtitles because dubbing is almost always pretty bad. I did switch to dubbing on an action film recently because I couldn't keep up with what was going on and read the subtitles at the same time.

I don't mind them. In action movies, sometimes you miss the action because you're reading subtitles, but other than that, I have no problem. Subtitles hurt the eyes less than poor dubbing.

LOL! I'll have to watch out for dubbing from now on. I don't want to damage my eyes.

I personally love movies that I have to read subtitles to, I find that different languages are facinating, and although I have no interest learning a third language it is more fun to watch the ones that I don't understand. I can watch japanese movies without subtitles, but no others. I find there is a rhythm that you have to get into in order to read what is on the screen and still get to see the actual shots of the film.

I never thought about the rhythm, but it's true. I've also noticed that sometimes I forget that I'm reading subtitles and start hearing the dialogue in my head as if the characters are saying it.

No Haivng subtitles dosnt ruin it at all for me. Two of my favorite movies are in subtitles. Which are Pans labyrnith and The lives of others. Theres more subtitled movies i enjoy, but those are just the ones that i think of at first.

Well, I enjoy a good movie, it can be in any language, if it's good it's good, reading a bunch of subtitles won't spoil anything. Unless you're watching it with someone who likes to read the subtitles out loud, with a bit of acting, then that can be annoying. But wait, that's me, I'm the one who does that, ha ha, so it's okay. Seriously, I don't think it's right to miss out on a great movie just because you don't speak the language, so many movies partially have subtitles as well, and I enjoy those too. I don't see why not. I especially like some Japanese movies, and I saw a movie in French once, it was really good. The subtitles don't bother me..

I watch subtitled movies all the time. I don't know French. We have a French channel at home and it shows some of the most wonderful movies I have ever seen. Besides subtitled movies can show the country in which movie is made more accurately than any other movie. My favorite movie is also subtitled. It is the Oscar winner No mans land. Regards

I'm from the Netherlands and practically everything foreign has subtitles there so I've grown used to reading the subtitles while watching the movie at the same time. I prefer movies to remain in their original language so I just have to accept the subtitles :)

I don't let the subtitles deter me if it's a movie that I want to see. As long as it's a good movie, I'll watch it no matter what langauage it's in.

Here in Sweden we have subtitles for all movies expect, of course, for the Swedish ones. Naturally I don't mind them since it makes the movie a bit easier to follow even when I understand the language spoken.

I'm not a great fan of subtitle movies as translation between languages, unless spot, on can change meanings. However if there's a movie I really want to see, I'll go even if there are sub titles.

If you speak only English (for instance)and the movie is in French (for instance), you can set your player to show a translation at the bottom of the screen. The various language options have to be part of the movie, of course.

i like to watch the foreign movies especially if they have subtitles as i would rather read than hear the strange dubbed diologues. strange because the people who do the dubing job r most often not able to bring those emotions in their accent/vioce which were actually carried by the actors. also i like to learn language so i prefer movies with subtitles. they r not annoying at least to me.

I liked subtitled movies better then doubted ones. I mean if you are able to read subtitles shouldn't be a problem. I hope people get my irony

no it's not. i find it very helpful and useful. it is because there are some scenes that are way too fast for them to talk so sometimes i can't understand what are they're talking about so i just always ending up in rewinding that scene from time to time if there's no subtitle
