Can you survive on 40 min of sleep a day?

Singapore
March 2, 2007 10:11am CST
Yesterday I went to bed at 6am. I tried hard to sleep but my mind was undergoing a power overload and I was turning and tossing till I finally manage to fall asleep at 10am. 40 min later at 10.40am, I was suddenly woken up and it just felt as if it was time for me to get up. So that was what I did and it is now already past midnight. Do you think one can survive on 40 min of sleep a day? Have you had similar experiences such as mine? Do share. :)

it is definitly possible, my other half used to sleep for around 30 mins a day for about 2 years because she had to feed her son through an eye dropper for near 23 hours a day so it is posisble but it takes a huge toll on your mind and body.

Oh, goodness me. I can't imagine surviving on 30 mins a day for 2 years... have you tried to enter her in the Guiness book of world records?

when your childs life depends on you you will do anything for them and if that means feeding them through an eye dropper for 23 hours a day then you do it i could be slightly out on 30 mins a day sleep it could have been a little more but not much more if he was not fed through the eye dropper he would have not survived, now he is alot different and feeds himself but still needs help with everything else and can't eat a meal like we can he has to have a special low protein milk.

Yes, I understand when you put it this way. Your wife is indeed a noble mother. ;-)

After about 4 days of dream deprivation studies show that the mind start to undergo psychosis.

That's interesting... I also read about dream deprivation. I mean, obviously sleep deprivation alone can be unhealthy, but I heard that part of the importance of sleeping, in addition to physical, mental, emotional health associated with sleep itself, is the importance of dreaming...

Umm. I thought it was a typo by aiguy01! Dream deprivation... thought that was sleep deprivation. I should think it is ok to go without dreams - even for long time - though that might make you not so creative. :P

Well if you tossed and turn, only to wake up later then apparently you didn't need too much sleep. They say that you'll know when you've had enough sleep. If you've been up all day, then I guess you've had all the sleep you can handle. However, I don't think anyone can live on 40 minutes of sleep every day for the rest of their life. That just seems like it's pushing it to me.

Years ago when I was much younger I could go without sleep for two days at a stretch, now I need at least five hours sleep a day. The human body is designed by default to go without sleep in case of certain situations like natural calamities, stress, personal tragedies, exams etc etc

you can do it for a very very short time and then the lack of sleep catches up with you. I have tried to live on very little sleep for a period of weeks and months due to the pressure of work. But after a while it hits you. You will get moody, forget things and also the standard of your work will suffer. Now go to bed ;o)

No way! I need about 5-7 hours sleep. I have found if I sleep longer I am cranky. And less sleep- I am not with it. I cannot even attempt to take a nap unless I can spare 2 hours, because less than an hour is a tease for me, and makes me cranky.

So how long do you sleep in all? I've got a friend whose naps stretch to like 4hours long... Anything more than 2hours in my opinion is not a "normal" nap. :P

I have trouble napping for a short period of time. My naps are usually quite long-people always laugh when I say I'm taking a nap, because they know that means I will be asleep for a while!!

I definitely couldn't survive with only 40 mins of sleep. I often spend that much time sleeping during the day if I have stayed up late the night before. I don't sleep very much at night and I am usually up at around 5am. I then read a book or go on the internet. I think I need at least 7 hours sleep to get me through the day.

I used to work 3rd shift, so my sleep patterns were pretty off. I'd come home sometimes and be completely wired so I wouldn't go to sleep right away. And I'd get maybe an hour or so before I had to go back to work. In my experience, one can go for about 3 days on little to no sleep before finally "hitting the wall". That's the longest I was able to go without crashing. On one particular occasion, I had gone with little to no sleep for about three and a half days and I blacked out. Apparently I had a long conversation on the phone with my mom, but I don't remember it. She said I got very negative about some of the people I work with. I have no idea what I said. I don't remember much about that day, except that we were having a blizzard. I don't remember how I got to work that night either, or getting dressed or anything. I suppose you could exist like that for a time, but it isn't healthy.

during finals and paper writing time!! can't do it for more than one day though - my wife has done it for 2 nights straight. i've heard of computer science majors doing it for a week straight before turning in a project - that just can't be healthy.

I guess it will depend how necessary the cause is. But of course, hitting your head against the floor might serve to keep you awake too. :P

I think i can BUT it gives me a lot of headaches! I used to sleep so late this past few months because of my projects and assignments in school. I usually go to sleep 1:30-2am and wake up 5am to be in school in time. And when im school, i can't concentrate that much because of my headaches.

It would do for me to take my nap even only an hour nap. That will make my body back in track for once again, even just that short sort of time.

I don't think I can survive a 40 minute of sleep. I'd probably be really grumpy on that day and would like to have a sleep. I don't have any plans of having the same experience as you are. Hehe! I enjoy sleeping and relaxing, that's my forte. Just one question, what did you do on that day after you're 40 min sleep?

I can survive only 2 days, if I sleep only 40 minutes a day! 1 month ago I was talking with some friends on yahoo messenger, and the time was passing... and I realize that it was 7 AM...I had to go to school and I could not sleep! When I came back from school, I had opened my PC, and starting to talk with my friends...And I had talking until 5 AM... then I gone to sleep, and at 7AM, I waked up, and I gone to school... After I came back I slept all the day!

If its an everyday thing, I don't think I will be able to do that. But if its only a one time thing, or at least there's an in between periods when I can recuperate my lack of sleep, then I can do it.

I know that physically it is possible to survive off of no sleep per day, but I know that it does take its toll on you. Insomnia won't kill you, it's just an inconvenience. It takes me hours to fall asleep sometimes, then I will wake up after an hour.

Exactly. I understand from a documentary once that for every day of late night you keep, you need a week to recover.. yet the damage is permanent. :/
