Did anyone save the blood from their baby's umbilical cord? I didn't, only because it was too expensive.

Yes storing cord blood and seperating stem cells in stem cell bank is a very costly procedure. Some 1000$ per year.It varies from country to country.I know about this for the past 3 years. Want to read an article on it: Check: http://www.helium.com/tm/78928/cord-blood-is-defined-asquotblood-from-the-placenta-drawn-through-the-newly-severed-umbilical-cord-c

Thanks for the response. Hopefully someday the cost will come down!

Actually this system started in our country just recently.and i read an article on it.It is really very costly & only rich can afford it.In our country only some film people & big businessman has done this.I don't have a baby yet but if the costs come down i will definitely do this to save my child from disesases which can occur to him in future.

My cousin donated her baby's cord blood. I don't know what the procedure is elsewhere, but here, if you donate it the bloodbank will keep a portion of it for your baby's/family's use should you ever need it. They also send a bi-yearly newsletter to her telling her what is "new" and what the blood is/has been used for. And should her baby's cord blood specifically be needed, she is sent an "announcement" of sorts. (It doesn't say who is receiving the donation or anything-it's more of a "thank you", although the recipient does have the option to contact her if she agrees.)

Hi DeenaD. Ive never kind of know about saving cord blood, in my country its not really talked about, or at least its not your common topic here. But most people of my culture, save and bury the after birth and actual bit of cord that comes away from the mother and baby. It is looked at as being part of you. :)
