when do you select a best response?

for me, that time comes when i have around 3-4 responses to my post, for that is unfortunately the maximum i seem to eke out with a single post...and i'm talking about my GOOD topics! lol but seriously though, when do you decide that its time? do you wait for a few days after the last response has been sent in or do you give it to the first one which captures you?

I'm not going assign best response to my discussion based on quantity of responses. I will probably decide on a minimum number of responses before I will consider assigning a best response, but I will probably primarily base it on time, either time since I started it, or time since last response. At the time I'm making this response to your discussion, I'm still fairly new here, and have only started one discussion, so I'm still developing my thoughts on how to handle some things. My $0.02 at the moment.

Isn't any sort of decision about when to assign a best comment rather arbitrary? :)After all, there's always the chance for one more response. My $0.02 at the moment.

I wait. I have had responses come in weeks after posting and really want to give all a chance at best response. As you meet new people they will take a look at your discussions and you will get more responses. I never give it to the first response unless it is the best. I will also never give it to one with less than one full line of text. I feel that if they put thought into it they will post more than one line.Sometimes you get one and know it is the best, as it just grabs you, then I go ahead and mark it, but for the most part I wait. You have prompted me to pick a few though as they have been up for a month and it seems like time to get off my duff with it!

glad to be of service! and i too feel that unless someone has put thought and effort into replying, theres no point in marking it. and it IS pretty hard to get a fab response at the first go so i too employ a policy of waiting and watching. thnx for ur reply!

You are still relatively new and so you could wait about a month and see who else discovers you. I too was picking after a couple of weeks with low turn out, however, now I can get answers sporadically over a month or two from everyone that sees my discussions. So at first a couple of weeks is reasonable. No need to rush things. Just please don't do it for the first responder or because they are your friend. Be sure it is a Best Response. Be patient and give it time. I will go check out your discussions now and try to help you.

i agree that rushing into selecting a best response if not advisable. and i definitely dont give the best reponse jsut because someone's my friend or is the first to response. that just wouldnt be fair! and thnx for promising to chek out me posts!

I used to wait a few days after the last response. Now I wait a bit longer - at least if i do not have many answers to choose from. Several times I've gotten really good replies after 5-6 days, even if a best answer is already chosen.

yup its always better to wait a while. i always find it pretty amazing when there are great responses even after a best response's been selected, for personally i only respond when there's a scope of being picked as the best! thnx for ur reply!

I usually wait for a reasonable time say 10 or 15 days and also three or four answers and then select Best Response.
