Last night we got hit with a major snow and ice blizzard....the winds blew a 40 mph, gusting at 73.....around 9 in the evening,we heard a loud popping noise and after exploring the house to see what had happened,we noticed that the computer had shut down but the fan was still running, the fridge light worked but the fridge wouldn't,the deep freezer was off,the clock on the stove was still visible but very dim but the stove wouldn't work, one phone had power but the other didn't,my microwave oven had no power at all,all the lights worked but were very dim and the tv,vcr and dvd still worked fine.....I looked outside,we had no street lights on our side of the road and all the houses were dimly lit.....the street lights worked fine on the other side and their lights were fine but they had no cable.....finally at 12:30 we lost all power but when I called the power company earlier that night to find out what was happening, they said we lost a transformer but it was only knocking out certain power.....I have NEVER heard of this before where it happens in only 'part' of the neighbourhood and only 'part' of your home.....has anyone else ever experienced this?

WOW...you might want to move south (smile) You had alot going on last night...I couldn't take too much snow and ice..I think we have had enough this winter.. Now with the power, yes we have had that happen, not with persay items on and off in the house. We have had our block completely dark, but not even a quarter mile down the street everybody street lights, home lights everything was working..It felt like I was leaving ghost town and going to where there is life...lol... That's wild how certain things in your home work...Well glad to know your power back on (being you are on the computer) *smile*

yes i have come across such a condition. But in my place there is no snowfall only rain so when there is heavy rain electricity goes off and then we have to suffer mosquito bites. thats the most irritating part and there will be nothing to do except to sit and talk to each other. No lights,tv,music system, computer nothing. It really makes me bore.

It sounds like there was a surge of electricity that came through your power box. This happens from time to time and that's why it's encouraged to use surge protectors. I think there is something else to for appliances. You could check with your local electric company for how to avoid this in the future. Yes I have heard of this happening, especially when the power goes off and then comes back on, for some reason some people experience what you have described if they haven't gone around and unplugged everything until the power comes back on. I'm not an expert and only passing on what I have heard I have been fortunate to have never experienced what you described. Quite a few years back we had a power outage here in California that was quite bizarre it affect like half the state, but I could have power but my neighbor across the street didn't, it was very strange to drive around that night and see sparatic people with and without power. This happened in the summer of 1999 where temps were over 100 degrees. I can't remember what exactly caused it, but the weirdest thing I ever saw. I was a lucky one and saw no disruption in power.

I have power surge plugs for all my major appliances....this was different than a power surge in my own box because it took out the whole street....it was just really weird.....

That's what I found strange....certain things shut down while others didn't.....the light on my monitor was still on,indicating power, the fan in my tower was still running but the tower itself had no power.....I'm glad it's back too, what a boring Friday night......
