I use linux because i approve the opensource concept, using linux you haven't more problems with malware, linux os is faster than windows and linux no needs for defragmentations. You can try linux on live cd ( so you can try it without installation) and see the differences between linux and windows

It depends on the software. I've used Open Office and Microsoft Office and I prefer MS, it just has more things going for it. Although OO is nice and handy sometimes. But programs like Firefox are wayyyyyyy better than IE.

Open source is the ultimate way to work - you've got a whole community by you and you have their support and bug fixes, plus it's really great for development and updates

i like open source because it eliminates the access of the cost of consumer and the creator by reducing the restrictions of copyright. this will lead to creation of additonal works, which build upon previous work and add to other social benefit. additionally, some proponents argue that open source also relieves society of the administration and enforcement cost of copyright. these self made protections free the general society of the cost of copyright infringement. thus, on several fronts, there is an effiency argument to be made on behalf of open source goods.

The answer is entirely software specific, In general I have found quite a few examples of opensource software far exeeding their paid counterparts, Firefox for example, leaves IE in the dust.........

If you are talking specifically about operating systems, then linux is more stable and less prone to virus attacks. Windows is compatible with many more software titles than linux. If you are using it on a personal computer, I would say go for Windows. If you are running a server, than go for unix.
