We have always carry a couple large dish towels with us when we travel to protect our clothes when we eat. We travel alot. We now carry few of the homemade bibs even for ourselves. It protects our clothes when we are eating on the go. They are so easy to make.
For kids it is a good idea to have a few really nice absorbant bibs on them all the time while traveling. A really nice travel bib can be made from dish towels. They are so easy to make and are large enough to protect clothes. Lets face it , if you want them to stay clean, it is a pretty good bet they will make a mess. this pattern is for one made from a dishtowel and it is for kids. You can also use a hand towel to make one for adults. They are great to have when you travel. They are very inexpensive to make
You will need a dish towel (used is fine)
T Shirt Collars (cut from old T shirts) for the bib collars
Matching buttons, velcro or other child safe fastener
Measure the length of the dishtowel and divide by three. Measure that length and create a fold. For example, if your dishtowel is 12 inches long, then you wnat fold it at 4 inches. Put two straight pens two inches from teh edges. This will be a guide for the neck hold
Keep the towel still folded, fold it again lengthwise, so the two pins touch. ON the fold, mark about 1 1/2 inches down from the top with a straight pin.
Unfold the lengthwise fold so you are left with only the original fold. Using the pins as guides, cut out half an oval. Once you unfold the towel, iw till be a full oval for the neck hole.
Cut the nexk band off an old T shirt. The bands need to be slightly smaller than the hole you cut
Fold the ends of the neck band inward and pin. Machine stitch closed. Make sure to finish off the ends.
Pin the neck band to the nexk hold you created in the dishtowel, remember the neck band will be slightly smaller than the hold. May sure the ends of the neck band are in the back of the bib. Remember to pin the neck band to the wrong side of the dishtowel.
Stitch the neck band to teh dishtowel. Sew around the remaining neck hold so it is finished off. Once you are done, turn inside out so seams are not showing
Find Where the neck band is open and sew a buton and button hole. Now you are done and can decorate it anyway you want.
You can also use quilt binding or any other kind of material for the neck. To make the larger ones for adults, you use the same pattern but adjust it to the size you need by using a larger hand towel or even half a bath or beach towel.

Well, you'd think something so useful would be more obvious. This a wonderful idea. My husband and I are going to travel across Canada ( New Brunswick to Saskatchewan) in April. Our daughter is graduating from Bible College and then a week later is getting married . We certainly have a pile of old tee-shirts around to use for the neck. And a few extra towels as well. It is about a 5 day journey and with all the hours on the road I am sure we will be snacking in the car. I tend to be messy and sometimes things get spilled if one has to stop quick in traffic . So I have one more project to add to my to-do list .
