Well..I have finished my anti-depressant medication. However...for the last week..I have not been able to sleep. I wake up at all hours and can't get into a deep sleep. The doctor today tells me it is not the medication...but what else could it be? Anyway..I got some sleeping aid pills and will take them tonight. Anyone have any suggestions on sleep aids?

As suggested by 'sigma33', Breathing exercise will prove very beneficial for your case. You must follow it regularly. Besides there are few Acupressure exercises which will help you further. a) Clasp the fingers of your both hands, into each other. Then try to press the fingers of left hand backwards, with the help of the fingers of your right hand. Maintain it for 20 seconds and bring it to normal. Repeat the exercise so as to press the fingers of right hand backwards with the help of left hand's fingers for 20 seconds and bring it back to normal. b) Put your right fore finger on the middle of left wrist and give pulsating pressure counting upto 40, then stop it. Now put your left fore finger on the middle of right hand's wrist and give pulsating pressure for 40 times then relax. It will also help you gaining sleep. c) Hold the tip of left hand ring finger by your right hand fingers. Press it for 30 seconds and relax. Again hold the tip of right hand ring finger by your left hand fingers and press it for 30 seconds and the release the pressure. The amount of pressure could sufgfgicientwhich you canb comfortably bear. Above exercises have been found to give very good results.

The Doctor is wrong Icequeen when you come of Anti deppressants you are suppose to weened of them depending on the Strength. And yes you will have sleep problems as the Anti depressants relax you. I am still on them I have been for 2 years now I did come of them once and I had to be weened of them as I am on high Strength, but when I came of them I could not sleep well and that is when my Doctor told me. As for the sleeping Aid try and get some herbal ones. They are better as again once you come of them you will have Problems sleeping so you are better getting herbal ones.

I have never used any sleeping pills or aids to fall asleep. I would guess that when people have trouble falling asleep, it is because their minds are occupied with thoughts. A simple trick I use every time is to become aware of my thoughts. While lying in bed, focus on your breathing. Just put your attention on how you are breathing without changing your natural rhythm. As you concentrate on your breathing, you will stop the flow of thoughts into your mind. It may be difficult to keep your focus on your breath as your mind will want to start up again. With practice, you can gently bring yourself to sleep using this method. You can use the 'focus on breathing' idea anytime of the day to relax or bring your attention to something.

Have you tried to make your body physically tired? Not immediately before you intend to sleep, but some hours before. E.g. if you are targeting to sleep at 11pm, go for a run at 7pm. Finish up, take a shower, relax with some music or TV. It might help you sleep. If this is not the issue, you might be "mentally charged up". Too many things on your mind... too much worries... if you can successful "stop thinking", it might help too.

I used to suffer really bad with insomnia and when I was on anti-depressants used to give me really bad nightmares, so I used to dread going to sleep, I would also have flashbacks too so I think subconciously my brain was telling me not to go to sleep but my body was if that makes sense. Thankfully the nightmares stopped as soon as I stopped the anti-depressants I was warned they do have nasty side affects and I was so glad to be off them, they didn't work for me. I do have a cure for my insomnia now, I always take a Suduko puzzle book to bed with me, after a couple of number crunching puzzles my brain tires and I can sleep peacefully without disturbance. Hope you find a cure to insomnia but don't resort to sleeping tablets because you can become hooked to them like anti-depressants.

Firstly , I think you should try not to rely on the sleeping pills, they only gave you a psychological effect that you cannot sleep without them,so in long term , you will really rely on it. For me if I am suffering from insomnia, I will have several methods. I may go to have a hot water bath, a hot watr bath stimulates the flow of the blood and may help you relax your body, then i may have a cup of hot milk, and then have a massage on the front of your head and the temples (two corners of your eyes). Hope you can sleep without taking the pills.
