The perils of internet addiction among teenagers today.

I have just read a newspaper feature article about internet addiction among teenagers in China. The situation has gone so bad that one person phrased it as, "Their souls have gone to the internet world". What happened was that the alarming worry of teenagers being addicted to internet has resulted in the setting up of clinics. These clinics are like drug rehabilitation centres where the internet junkies are confined to exact replicas of prison cells. NO INTERNET for sure. Parents are paying about USD1300 a month for the treatment. Mind you, that's 10 times the average salary in China! What views do you have regarding this issue. Do you feel that there are ways to curb internet addiction amongst teenagers failing which may result in mental disorder?

Parents today seriously need to moniter the amount of time there children are on the internet. It should be used for reaserch purposes for school only. I use it to go to a few educational gaming sites for my kids because they are very young but when they getolder and need to access thei nternet for reaserch reasons I will be with them to monitor where they visit.

It is good to hear from parents who feels the need to monitor their children's internet activities. Perhaps, more softwares could be created for parents to be able to monitor remotely such activities. Let more parents voice their concerns. Prevention is better than cure.

I honestly don't have an answer to this but think it is not just a teenager problem. I admit, I am an internet addict (that is step one I believe - admiting my addiction). I walk in the house, kick off my shoes, and connect. I go a day without internet and I go into panic rather than thinking "what should I do instead" I think "how am I going to get online"...

As adults, we somehow can still control ourselves. But teenagers, being less matured mentally would be just lost into the cyberspace. I love the internet too. I cannot think of any other hobby and interest that has cause me so much passion in it.
