weiner dogs for hunting?

who decided to domesticate and breed weiner dogs (dachshunds) for hunting? i have one and no way he could kill anything!

They were bred in Germany and the area to go into burrows after badgers and rabbits. We have two: 1 is super smart and one time killed a rat that was in our back yard and brought it to me. The other is not too smart, but very loving. But let them get the scent of something like a toad or mouse in our back yard and they will go after it. We have some wood landscape timbers around the back and they will dig and claw at those to get at something under there. So, yes, I think they do have that hunter instinct.
