When you offer meals to a family (if they have suffered a tragedy or are recuperating from a hospital stay or having a baby, etc) what do you like to bring? do you bring an entire meal or an entree or maybe snack foods?

I think I would bring some kind of cake , It would probably depend on what I thought the person might be able to eat. A cake would be alright because I think it would be a nice jester even for later or maybe for other family members, just so they know that you care.

Hi Modestah,
When times like these present themselves, the family is usually too stressed to think about cooking anything.
I always try to fix an entire meal. It sounds expensive but you can come up with full meals that are great and don't cost a lot.
I usually fix a large platter of fried chicken. I make a huge bowl of potato salad and a large bowl of beans (green beans or pinto beans) and a large tomato and lettuce salad. I fix a platter of biscuits or at least a loaf of bread and a big jug of tea.
Sometimes I fix a double casserole of enchilades accompanied with tortilla chips and salsa and tea.
The family always appreciates such effort.

I would probably bring soup. Soup can be an entire meal in itself and gives the feeling that you don't need to eat more food when you don't feel like it.

I try to bring an entire meal. I have also been the recipient of such meals, so I know how needed this can be, and how appreciative it is to receive such also. I try to include a meat, some vegetables, a potato, maybe a salad, a bread and a dessert. Also, I bring a 2 litre of a soft drink also. If you know there are children, you can bring popcicles, suckers or something special like that. I just try to think of what I'd like to get if it were me getting the dinner. Great discussion by the way.

A lot would depend on the situation,I would usually take over a tray made up with cold cuts ,cheeses and a couple of dozen home made buns,If it was someone fairly close to me I would take over A hot meal, such as swiss Steak and a Salad.Potatoes and a veggie.
And always my families favorite cake, that is a must.I will post my recipe.
