Do You Want To Grow Herbs?

Growing herbs is a great way to add variety to your cooking. The key is to have the herbs at your fingertips so you just have to reach up and snip off some when you need them. Is there an extra window somewhere that you would like to "green up"? Why not add some shelves to the window you already have and add pots of herbs or vegetables. Then you have your won indoor potted garden. Admit it, it sounds appealing to you and there is that window in there that would be perfect to use that space and grow herbs or veggies to eat! HUH?? What do you think?

I would love to have fresh herbs again, but now that I live in an apartment and have no yard space at all, it's been really kind of out of question. The window box thing sounds good, but I live in an historic building that has been renovated and I don't know if my landlord would approve of that. Sigh.

i have perpemint growing outside in as many places as it will grow. it grows vigerously it it has just the right amount of sun. it is interesting to see where it thrives and where it won't grow. Which Herbs would be best to start in my north facing window? I aslo have a south facing window i could use but i have a fantastic tree in my front yard which keeps my southfacing window in the shade about 90% of the time

I use herbs everyday but htey aren't the fresh ones. I would love to grow a little herb garden if I could keep the animals out of it. Along time ago my granny had a herb garden and she explained to me a few things which I have long now forgotten about what herbs not to plant next to other ones and so on. my kitchen window faces north and all I see is a hillside and not much sun it's more often then not shady. But I think I could grow some in my living room window sill. Could you give me some examples of some herbs that grow easy? And what not to plant next to another plant?

Acturally, I have had wonderful luck with most herbs. They take very little care and they are so much better when you can use them fresh verses dried.

I've thought about doing this sooo many times but just never got around to. Do you know if those erb "kits" grow decent herbs? I've never really been sure of which kind of method or kit works best. Any suggestions? Thanks.

You would need to check with your local extension office as to which ones grow best in your area. They offer their services for free. I did a discussion on County Edtension offices. On that discussion , I posted a link to find the nearest one to you.

I think it's a wonderful idea! So wonderful in fact that I've been doing it for a couple of years now.. LOL.. I'm a "kitchenwitch" and working with herbs is probably one of the most joyous things I do. It's great to get in the dirt and do the planting. It's great to watch them grow and know that YOU did it. The green just spruces up my dining room when they are in there and on nice days, I take all my pots and put them along the sides down my outside stairs.. makes my entrance look pretty good. The smell of fresh herbs is so wonderful.. my favorite I think is the basil. And having fresh herbs to use in my cooking is just wonderful too.. The taste is so much cleaner and vibrant than when you buy the packages in the grocery store.

Hi! You are so right! I have a perfect window (actually two) in my kitchen that would work very well for growing herbs. I think most of the time I think, "Oh, I'll do that someday," but I never do. I should really do it this year, especially now with garden seeds out in the stores. Thanks for the gentle reminder to do what we enjoy and quit putting it off for another time! :-)

This wouldn't really work very well for me, because I don't have a window. I do have a balcony, but it doesn't get much sun. And my husband does woodcarving out there, so it gets kind of messy. Anyway, we kill plants. We either water them too much, or we forget to water them. I think the gardening will have to wait until we get more organized.

I have actually tried this a few times...but my daughter seems to enjoy watering the plants also. Sadly, to the point that she drowns them. ha ha Not really funny...I baby them for weeks and all of the sudden, they are drowning and it is too late by the time I see it. *sigh* And she is so sweet. Each time I asked her why she had to water it so much and explained that a plant does not need that much water. But she tells me (crying because she killed the plant) that she was just trying to help and that she thought it was thirsty. So...I digress to wait on having my own fresh herbs growing in window sills until my little ones are a bit older. :) But it is a very lovely idea!!!

Every year I say I am going to have a table top herb garden, but I still have not done this. Maybe this will be the year. There are so many herbs to choose from I have no idea which ones to grow. I was wondering if some are easier than others?

I would love to grow herbs. I have a perfect bay window. My problem is my spoiled rotten tabby cat! He will not leave plants alone. He nibbles on them! He ends up killing most all of my house plants by chewing on them. I know he would be attracted to herbs! My husband and I cook with a great deal of herbs and spices so to grow our own would really help costs as well as the indoor air quality! What on earth can I do about this spoiled cat!?!

I would really love to grow herbs as well but I don't have a good kitchen window and my cat would probably eat them as well... The other thing is, I don't know how to go about growing them; my husband bought an herb kit years ago for me that I still have; I don't think they go bad..? Once you get an herb growing, is it possible to take a 'cutting' and replant it elsewhere..?

yes, you can acturally move your plant outdoors in summer and back indoors in the fall.

I think it is a great idea. I have often wanted to do this. But, I have two cats, and it is impossible to do something like that indoors. I don't have a green thumb, but would still love to have fresh herbs. The dry jared ones do not compare to the taste and freshness of fresh herbs. Nice post, rating you a + for it.

Had a discussion something like this a couple of months ago and am interested in your responses. Tis a good idea for health and nutrition and just makes your indoor environment better. Introducing fresh herbs into your diet can lend itself to improving taste and health. So if at all possible we should indeed have some herbs attending our kitchen. Thanks for sharing this today.

That's funny, I was just thinking about this yesterday. I'm afraid the only really good window I have is my kitchen window which has shelves filled with african violets (different colors and styles) and Christmas catus. I was however looking at my bedroom were there is a good sunny window but my cedar chest sits in front of it. I was thinking about a "strawberry pot" those ones with the little openings for plants along the sides, one would sit nicely on the cedar chest and I could put herbs in rather than strawberries - I'm sure not all herbs would work but was thinking some might.

This is such a great idea, can you suggest any that would be fragrant and add a nice aroma to the area where they are kept?

Yes, I will definitely grow herbs in the garden this summer, and probably try to have an indoors herbal garden as well. Nothing like snipping a few herbs fresh from the garden or pot when you need them. For flavour, and for the good feeling you get from growing your own...
