Why are more people commiting suicide each year?

I have seen lots of figures saying that suicides are increasing each year. Especially in young males. Why is this happening? I see a lot of people who are very unhappy and who are having difficulty seeing a place for them in society. The world is very dog eat dog at the moment. Employers think nothing of their employees, people are bullied at school, so many people can never afford to buy a home or support themselves properly. The world appears to be getting crueller every day. Each day we can see reports of 50, 60 70 people being killed in Iraq, Afghanistan or other disasters. Yet these figures seem to mean nothing any more. Have we stopped feeling love and compassion for our fellow human beings?
