How many of you crafters get bored making the same item over and over?

I think it's really easy to get bored of doign the same thing over and over again. This is especially true for crafters who make popular items that they have to restock over and over again. Sure, it's great to make the money, but after making hte same pin for the 25th time, it starts to feel a mot more like work instead of artistic expression. Bordom can also happen (or at least with me) when I have a really large project that require a lot of the same motions over and over again. Things like knitting a big scarf, or even embroidering a rather large design, can also start to get old. This is why I have some projects that have taken me over a year to do because I just need a break and can't look at it anymore.

I made an anklet last summer and wore it out to a gig one night. By the end of the night I had 3 orders for the same anklet. Then my mother wanted one.... she had a friend who wanted one... my best friend wanted one... then my friend's friend wanted one... etc. etc. To answer your question, yes. I do get bored making the exact same thing over and over but I'll keep making them as long as they keep paying me! LOL.

Well, yeah, if it's worth my while and orders are piling up, lol. Right now I'm making a set of 8 placemats. I have 4 done and it's going to be truly a labor of love to squeeze the other 4 out of me!

Actually, I don't really get bored...but most of the crafts I do are fairly quick, so I can finish it in a few hours. I often watch TV or listen to music at the same time, so I find it quite relaxing to not really have to focus. Sometimes I get impatient though - I like the feeling of being finished, and I want to be finished now.

Yes, quick ones are the best, otherwise you have a great big mess sitting around for a week.

Gourd Art Display - Buena Park Public Library March and April 2007.
I tell people that everything I make is a one-of-a-kind and I'd be happy to make them something similar in colors of their choice. That way they know they have an original and I don't ever get bored repeating myself. I also tell them, "I'm an artist, not a factory." And if you have a waiting list, make sure you mention it. You can say "I'd love to make you a (________) but you are 14th on the waiting list so it will be a few weeks/months/years.

I do, but then I start a new project and go back to my old project later on.

Well good for you, sometimes I don't finish a project! Maybe you just need a break from the first one.

Oh heck yeah...and if you look around my apartment and see the cornicopia of different crafting supplies you would know a crafter with ADD certainly lives there. In all seriousness I do get burnt if I do too many of the same craft. This is especially hard for me in the holiday seson. I sell my knitting so that means stocking up on my popular items....so making lots of them...and then sometimes people want custom items so that means making even more of the same. I try to space it out of the year, alternating projects. But still...crafting burnout can strike. That when I drop knitting and opt for gluing buttons and rhinestones to containers. It's a totally different direction and yeild a pretty result.

I love to make things mostly just for myself, but then I need some breathing space between projects until the "mood" strikes me again. I do better with projects that only take an hour or so.

My crafts are one of a kind because thigs like the dream catchers. I have put togerher some using sharks jaws and the sharks jaws are not the same . I have to work around the differences and I also will decorate these (and all of my crafts) diferently.

When I was in highschool i made hemp jewelry or macreme jewelry and sold it at school, you can do different things with it but only to a certain extent now I cant even look at it. I make jewelry with almost anything else if someone were buying for their kids and had to have the same exact thing if possible I would make the matching item but other than that I wont to a design exactly the same over again, Im always changing something up.
