Kids decorations are often geared to disney characters and other popular characters that kids can watch on TV. I am wondering if you were going to buy kids decor that wasnt centered on a character, what would it be? I have been working on designing kids room decor and need some ideas on what kinds of things people would buy?

We didn't do characters for Holly's room, we did her room in pink and purple, with flowers and butterflies. It is a room which suits her now, but will continue to age with her. Nothing too childish or anything which would be outgrown too soon. Unicorns or hummingbirds would have been pretty, too. I always thought if I ever have a little boy, I'd love to do his room in trains.

You don't say how what age children or if they are girls or boys. But if they are old enough to express an interest in any activities you might think about centering the decor around the activity that they seem to enjoy the most. If they are old enough to express themselves talk to them and ask them to tell you about their favorite place, faorite animal, color, season etc. Working together you should be able to come up with something that will please you both. If they are to young to express an opinion I would go with something that they will not out grow to quickly unless you plan on redecorating often. Little girls might enjoy butterflies, ballerinas, etc. Little boys might like a sailor theme, sports, cars etc. Both boys and girls could enjoy a farm theme, zoo theme nature theme etc. As far as what to buy, once again if you are planing on major furniture items I would buy things that the children can grow with. Furniture that could fit with most any decor and that you could change the appearance of with different bedding etc. Another thought is decorating with sheets. You can let your children pick out sheets that they like and design a whole room around the sheets. You can make great curtains, spread, pillows, wall hangings etc. from sheets.
