I worked at a Petco in Indiana for 2 years. I worked off the clock and through my lunch hour taking care of all the animals. I knew if I didn't do these things that needed to be done the birds wouldn't have fresh water until the next day. The animals cages in wellness would never get cleaned unless I cleaned them. The worst part of working there was seeing the long term effects of inbreeding by the company Petco gets their animals from. Animals with tumors, respitory infections, dehydrated babies taken from their mothers to soon and offered only huge chunks of compressed lab blocks that is bigger than the animal trying to eat it. Many babies would die because they were unable to eat the only thing the company would let us feed them or get fired. Please share your thoughts on this matter. I'd love to hear others points of view.

im afraid petco would have to fired me.an i would report them for abuseing animals.i dont shop there. an we have one close to me.i also think its a very nice thing you are doing. spending you lunch hour takeing care of these animals.if you would send me your name an what store you worked at i would send petco an note saying that you earn an excellent award.for going beyond the call of duties.

Soooo sorry for the long delay to your response but get this it is because I am looking for a new job because Petco let me go on my 2 year anniversary. They claimed it was because I took crickets from the store. How retarded of a reason is that.
The reason I was let go was because I cared to much for the animals and stood up for what I knew was the correct food they should have been getting. They changed all the animals onto compressed corn lab blocks that have no nutritonal value at all just to save money on the food cost.

Whenever Petco cut cornors the cuts are always with the animals. First big money saving cut was their food. Petco change from the proper (but more exspensive)food to the cheapest, longest lasting food they could find. Which is compressed corn with no nutritional value at all.
Next big money saving change was with the small animal bedding. They went from using Care Fresh to a cheap knock off they claimed was as good as Care Fresh only cheaper.
This is an out right lie.
The new bedding called Total Comfort concicted of what Petco calles "reclaimed resources" which means they reclaimed garbage they recovered from dump sites.
It seemed to consist of very fine paper, dryer lint, bits of charcol, some tiny twigs and what appeared to be either cat litter or dirt, not sure on that.

That is so sad. You should report them to animal rights. I know People pay pretty prices for pets at petco. You sound like a really good person to do what you did. You know the dateline news does reports like this. Get in touch with them and try to get the news out, how the animals are being abused.
