Do you "Dump" on yourself?

You know - get angry at what you do, or who you are? To yourself of course - your sentences to yourself? Are your thoughts about yourself demoralizing? What does it do to you?

Being the perfectionist I am, I am not only demanding with others but especially with myself. When I undertake a task, I always give it my best shot, but often end up dissatified with the result. I always think that I could have done better. I am my own pain-in-the-@rse, basically. ;)

Thomas, not good! I'm sure if I told you you are perfect as you are you wouldn't believe me anyway, so I won't bother! But at least use a softer stick every now and then, ok!

Unfortunately I do a lot of self-talk and nearly all of it is negative. I mirror the negative things that both my parents have said to me my entire life and still do say them to me even though I am an adult now. I am in counselin and trying very hard to change my self-talk into positive talk. My counselor today was telling me how to change that self-talk into the positive talk by asking questions such as What makes this true [the negative thing that I just said to myself]? and the other question is What makes this not true? It's an eye-opener for me and very difficult after so many years of dumping on myself as being a worthless person who is a stupid loser and fat and ugly. All stuff the parents have said basically. But I know that I must change this negative self-talk because it makes me feel so bad about myself and really makes me want to not be here [in life]. Some days are better than others. I am a work in progress.

A work in progress, and a work of art too don't forget. I agree, some days are really tough. I think it helps me to keep busy. While I'm too idle I think these terrible thoughts too much. Thanks horsesrule.

Oh I frustrate the crap out of myself. It used to make my mother crazy when I was in school, because I would write some paper or what have you nd it was never the paper I saw in my head, so when it wasn't realized I got very very angry with myself. I think that's probably the case with all creative people. So yeah, I'm pretty hard on myself.

Mars. Check your Mars, particularly Mars Uranus. Not easy. Fire in excess.

Not really. I tend to be somewhat laid back I guess when it comes to pushing myself. I just seem to do what needs to be done! I could definitely do with a little more get up and go sometimes though and push myself harder on occasion. Thankfully I would consider myself to be naturally motivated without being too obsessed with it! I have definitely been like this before though and it was not a very comforting way to live my life as it was extremely stressful.

Seems like you found a balance here, motivated yet not pushing too hard. Nice one. Thanks James.

No, actually I don't. The only thing I do tend to do which I don't consider demoralizing is say "DUH?". Some days, I feel like I left my brain in bed when I got up. But, I sweat it, usually it's quite amusing when I realize I made a pot of hot water instead of coffee. LOL

I am perfectly happy with the way I am . I get angry only on other people when they try to be someone else than themselves. We live in a world where everybody shouts that you can be who you are and be accepted for that...But still, everybody seems to continue with their envy and hypocrisy. Sure,I'll be happy to look like George Clooney and have the fortune of Bill Gates...but what's the use?I would be a famous and rich pretender. And I don't want that. People should start accepting their actions as part of who they really are, without getting depressed or demoralized by those actions. For bad things...there is always common sense and logic.I don't have to kill someone only to prove something, and I don't have to rob to make my fortune grow. By being happy with who I am,I have a lot more important results.

Will Mr Profetu please stand up! Interesting when you're told "Be yourself, relax". Yet when you do you are tormented because you don't conform. We are moulded to behave a certain way in terms of what society wants, yet this is not Being but acting. You know, unfortunately most people are not themselves. So if you're getting out of the mould I'll take my hate off to you. Want any pointers feel free to ask. You'll need paint stripper, turpentine, a scraper, steel capped boots, sunglasses, a good hat, strong rope, swiss army knife..............

I sometimes get really pist at myself for something that I might have done but I try not to do it often because this is a bad habit and has a negative effect on one's personality and character. We should all tell ourselves that we are humans and humans make mistakes. I used to be a real hot-head, used to punch on the anything whenever I got angry but now I keep my cool and rationlize whatever has happened. My past behavior was very negative and I was never benefitted with it. But now that I have changed my perspective, I am benefitting from it.
