Tithing is not a thing of the old testament, The obligations from the old testament are not wiped out because there is a new one but , It serves as a reference and also it is very important for us to follow the Old testament instruction not neglecting the new tastament's too. Because tithing is to say Here is One tenth of all the blessings you gave to me. Is compulsory and Essentail

Jesus said that we should give what we intend to give with out compulsion,'cause God loves a cheerful giver. Tithe is a 10 percent of your income as in the Old Testament to give for the Temple. But Jesus magnified it that we should give everything to God not just in monetary but also our lives as well.

You say that "tithe" is only mentioned in the Old Testament and that is correct of the exact word of the nature however the true alternate word for "tithe" is "tenth" and if you do a search through the New Testament and look for tenth you will find there are several times when it is mentioned about people giving a tenth to God. Below you will simply find 1 time it is mentioned within the chapter of Matthew, however do to my rating not being high enough to paste stuff you can go to.... http://www.biblegateway.com and do a keyword search through the New Testament. Matthew 23:23 "Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you hypocrites! You give a tenth of your spices — mint, dill and cummin. But you have neglected the more important matters of the law—justice, mercy and faithfulness. You should have racticed the latter, without neglecting the former.

Tithing is a command in the OT. God required Israel to tithe. During Jesus time, tithing was something that was not a big issue then. Why? Because practically all Jews tithed. Jesus did talk about tithing: See Matthew 23:23. Further, in my personal experience.. It is good to tithe! God's protection to those who love and obey His commandment is ever with them.
