Eugene Oneill published in 1922 his play "The Hairy Ape". It has very few characters. The protagonist "Yank" longs for belongingness and identity. Unable to find it in a dehumanised American Society, Yank finds it in a gorilla. Then, his tragic end takes place. The ending is somewhat unimpressive, because the author calls it a comedy. Critics said that the play was an ironic tragedy.
Could I have your valuable comments?

OMG I haven't thought of that play in a good 16 years. I had to read it for one of my theater classes. My one teacher loved Eugene O'Neill although I thought he was a bit over rated myself. I wouldn't call it a true comedy, maybe a satirical comedy but even that is stretching it. It's a commentary of the way society behaves and treats one another, most of which was exaggerated in the play.
