Motor Neurone Disease(MND)is a rare neurodegenerative disease resulting in progressive weakness of voluntary muscles throughout the body.MND is a relentlessly progressive disorder with a worldwide distribution.Incidence: 1.8 per 100,000 per year. The weakness is secondary to degeneration and eventual loss of motor neurones within the brain and spinal cord. Both upper Motor neurones (UMN) and lower Motor Neurones(LMN) can be affected. Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis(ALS) is the most common subtype of MND.Death from MND is usually due to ventilatory failure.Progressive weakness of the respiratory muscles ultimately leads to retention of carbon dioxide with or without a degree of hypoxia, resulting in somnolence and coma. Some patients succumb more acutely to pneumonia, which may be precipitated by dysphagia and aspiration. Anybody with information about treatment and medical advances in this field or know anything of communities of people having MND, or if you want to discuss anything of this disease are free to discuss here.
