I've read some of the findings... 46%...Indians, the highest in Asia, sleep for less than 6 hours. 64%...wakeup prior to 7 a.m., the highest in the world...! Why..to catch up 24x7 global lifestyle of work nad fun. Are u one of them...?(At present I'm not).

hey you Indians are lucky to get up at 7 a m. Here in Israel people get up at 5 a.m . They have to travel at least an hour to reach to thier work, which starts at 7 or maximum 8 am....., Like you we also work till 5 or 6 pm. By the time we come back it is almost 7 or 8 pm because while coming back we have heavy traffic jams......when we reach home we start second shift, working at home, cooking for dinner etc....it is almost 11:30 everyday that we some how manage to get into bed. You cannot imagine how we hate it when the alarm clock strikes at 5. pm next morning........life is very difficult here. People don't even have time to sit and eat, they walk and eat while thier mobiles are still on........The peace that We had found in India, we never found here. So count yourself lucky.

Hi dear, I think it is not the case , If you see the culture of Indians they have been following some things like Hindu's " Surya Namaska" paying to sun when it rises , Muslims " their "Niskara" before rising. Christians going to church for early prays before 6 AM . for all these things you have to wake up early, right? as the day progressed I think the rising time has increased up to 7 as per ur diss. I think in the previous there are not such faclilities like TV so people go to bed early ( No other entertainment) now they watch TV till late night & rise acording to custure so the sleeping time reduces that is natural ......

i think there might be two possible reason for this, firstly the school going children are there , so its natural atleast their mothers will too wake up with them to make breakfast, then indians are religious too, most of them wake to say their prayers, atleast i have watched my in-laws daily waking at 5:00 pm, and thirdly the village population of india they have to work hard, their are lots of work in farm homes, i know since we had a farm, so at time my mother, other's workers too used to wake up early in the morning , although once we selled our farmhouse and settled in city, she now wakes at either 6;30 or 7:00pm.

Well, I am not going to comment on the survey you have provided because according to me what I feel is, it all depends on the necessity of the individual. While I was in college(I was staying in hostel) I used to wake up early so that I am in my college bus by 8 Am and on weekends and at holidays at home I sleep till 9 or 10 like one of the respondent to this discussion said. So necessity decides your sleep. And now also I sleep sometimes till 8.30 or 9(bcoz no imp, work to do). Also depends on the individuals interest of choosing his/her job. Again here comes the necessity like those who work in call centers so night shift will be there etc..but somehow they compensating in the day time. Now people are realising that their body needs enough sleep and I have seen people taking breaks from their jobs for a while and relaxing.

first of all you have to give references of study conducted in this area . otherwise it is difficult justify this. if you are saying this on the basis of your observation of your near and dear ones then it can not be generalized or applied to whole community.

Well I don't know about the stastics but I come from a small town in India where the most of the town slept before 10 pm. My family slept even earlier. My grandmother gotup at 5am while the rest of the family including children got up by 7am latest (my grandmother always slept in the daytime to makeup). So what I am saying is that even though we got up early we went to bed early too so we got 9-10 hours of sleep overall. I don't agree with the stastics. Now I know they watch late night tv shows "Kaun banega karorpati" finishes at 11pm so they sleep by midnight and have to getup before 7 to get to school on time. So it is TV which is eating their sleep. Also computer with internet will kill their sleep time I guess.

REally? I've never heard of this yet since you brought this topic up in your discussion. Well, I think it would be best to have some Indians here around to basically give us an idea. lol. ANyway, if they really sleep less, well maybe because that's how they are being brought up. Of that's what their tradition is. Or they have to work hard as early as before 7am to be able to go home early in the afternoon. :)

Umm.. this is interesting! I've only known of surveys that go by age, and not by nationality. I know people of higher age sleep less, for instance. In India, perhaps sleep is a luxury because of the transport system? You need to wake up earlier to beat the jam? Just a guess. :P
