Cancer Causing Chemical Found in Children's Bath Products

Did everyone read this report? http://www.breastcancerfund.org/site/pp.asp?c=kwKXLdPaE&b=2483603 Check the list to see if any products you used are named. "A hidden cancer-causing petrochemical has been found in dozens of children's bath products and adults' personal care products, in some cases at levels that are more than twice the U.S. Food and Drug Administration's lenient recommended maximum." "Contrary to what many consumers may believe, the FDA does not review or regulate cosmetics products or ingredients for safety before they are sold to the public and has no legal authority to require safety assessments of cosmetics." I would like to let everyone know about a website that reviews ingredients in cosmetic products including children's bath products. It tells you if any ingredients are harmful and to what level. I have been referring tot his website before I buy any related products: http://www.ewg.org/reports/skindeep2/advanced.php I hope you all find this helpful!

That is just amazing that these products are out there. When I first open your discussion I was like no way is what I use in there and it was. Guess I will be going home to take care of that. I would have never thought about such a thing. Thank you very much. I will be forwarding this to all my friends.

I'm glad you found it useful. I was really surprised to see some very common brand names listed as well. Seems like the majority of people use Johnson's baby wash and shampoo.

I still use it on my children and that is truly scary. I try to protect them as much as possible and there is so much out there. They make these things smell great and the kids love them.

When my children were small I avoided bath products as I had heard they are associated with urinary tract infections.

that's right. to an extent. children under 7 shouldn't use bubble bath as their urinary tract is not fully formed, and they are more likely to get product in the tract and develop an infection. some bath products are fine, though. the people that run Lush invented the bath ballistic because their son had this problem with bubbles. bath ballistics are fine to use on even newborn children (Lush ones are. I don't know about other companies, because I don't know what they put in theirs)

Great post. It is amazing to me that people never think about what is in the products they rub into their skin. The skin is the bodies largest organ! You wouldn't rub toxic goo into your liver or heart, but bring on the cosmetics! We try to use mostly all natural soaps and bath products. I will be even more diligent about what I use on my baby. Thank you for drawing attention to this.. I, too, will pass this on.

That's just shocking. Nowadays I only use Lush products, but I used to use Herbal Essence (although it definitely didn't do much for my hair) and just the idea that it has cancer causing chemicals and probably other toxic ingredients in it just pisses me off. Especially the products for kids, that's horrible. I have to say though that it sadly enough doesn't surprise me that much. These companies really don't care about us, they just want to make some money. In the end most of them really don't care what kind of horrible things they put into bath and shampoo products and that's why I refuse to use any from these companies. I'd rather pay a bit more money for products that I know are safer. Lush still uses a few chemical ingredients (like parabens and SLS), but at least not to the degree of this!

Thank you so much for posting this. It is scary now days what is put into baby products. Many people do not know that you should not buy any baby powder that contains talc because it is bad for your baby to ingest. Also mineral oil should not be used on children because it does not allow their skin to breathe. I hope people continue doing research on what is healthy for their children.

I love the SkinDeep website, and use it to research all the personal care products I buy for my daughter. I'm more lax about products for myself, and need to work on that. It hasn't been long since I read that article, and promptly tossed all the Johnson's and Huggies baby washes in her bathroom in favor of Aubrey's Organics.
