Cleaning your stove

I have a glass top stove. Does anyone have an idea of something to clean it with other than the expensive cleanser that you purchase from the appliance store? I don't want to scratch it up, but I can't keep paying $7 a bottle for that cleaner either.

Next time you are in the store, check out SoftScrub cleanser. It is non-abrasive liquid cleanser (you can get it with and without bleach) and probably will do the trick for you. I believe that Windex or 409 Multi-purpose would work for you as well.

DONT USE 409! It'll leave a film you cant get off cooktops!

The sales man told me not to use 409. I tried soft scrub, and it worked well. Someone else suggested scratch free Comet.

Soft Scrub - cleaner
I have a Whirlpoor ceramic smoothtop range and I use Soft Scrub cleaner on it when I cant afford the $8.00 a bottle one. Also, the Clorox Kitchen WIPES work wonders for a quick splatter clean up job.

I know. I refuse to pay what they want for it at Home Depot. I will try the soft scrub and the kitchen wipes, because i keep both for other jobs.

mix one part vinegar to two parts water. It works well and will not scratch. Also, go to walmart and get the microfiber cloths. You can get a package of about 10 for about 5dollars. They work great as far as cleaning goes and they will not scratch either. Use one to clean with and a dry one to dry behind and polish. Then you have a nice, clean shiney stove top with no streaks! I also use them on windows and the bathroom mirrors, fixtures, and the tub, sink and toilet and when i finish there are no streaks and everything is nice and shiny. If you have a few dollars to spend, go to QVC.com and order Professor Amos's "the bom".. you can get a gallon for like 28.00 but it is awesome! You wet your cloth with water, spray the bom, wipe with the wet cloth, then polish and shine with a dry cloth. It makes everything look like new. I love that stuff. and since you use water with it, it lasts a very long time! It will even shine your floor! The biggest thing to keep in mind when cleaning glass though is to use cloths that wont scratch the surface. Those microfiber cloths are excellent for such jobs. And you wash them (do not use fabric softener) and let them air dry, or dry on low... I hope this helps!

I love the microfiber cloths. I have some for washing my van. I will have to try them on the stove.

One of the reasons that you need the special cleaner is that it adds a protective layer on the stove that acturaly helps prevent scratches from your pans. It does not just clean. You can use other ways to clean it with no problem but they wont add the protective coating and some of the other cleaning solutions will remove the coating that is already on the stove. So be careful what you use

I hadn't thought of that. I will definately be careful what I put on it.

My Nan used to use a mixture of warm water and vinegar to clean glass, the vinegar cuts through grease easily too. It won't scratch the surface and will bring it up clean every time, hope this helps

what a great idea. thanks for sharing it. I think it will help. Did you use plain vinegar or Apple cider?

This may sound wierd but give it a try, use baby wipes. Since I had my son 3 years ago I have found that baby wipes are one of the greatest inventions on earth. They are soft so they don't scratch the surface and they contain a gentle cleanser that is strong enough to take poop off a bum. My son is almost potty trained now but I still keep a stock of wipes on hand because I use them whenever I clean anything. Hope this helps.

I've been amazed at what Baby wipes will work on. It's a bit scary actually.
