opposites and existence

What do you guys think of the idea that nothing exists without its opposite and everything exists because of its opposites (if my semantics render these statements invalid please forgive me, i hope you know what i mean). This idea is generally regarded as Taoist. Does it have any other origins? Most importantly, do you consider it valid?
