Pricing your cake

80th Birthday Cake - This cake was measured 12" by 18" and was decorated by painting on rolled fondant with food coloring. Each square was named after a family member, and finished with a golfer on top and a little dog figurine to make it extra special.

Hi. I am wondering if anyone can share some tips on what to price my cakes. I work with buttercream and painted fondant. I don't want to outprice my cakes or be unrealistic, however, I'd like to make a little money on them. The cakes in the grocery store are reasonable, but they buy their supplies in bulk and I do not. What has worked for you? I'm attaching an example of my work. Thanks for your help.

Hey, great work. Usually when you custom made cake you price by slice. It all the depend on what type of frosting you are using and detail work. For a cake like that I would of charge 150.00. You have a lot of hand painting and I belive some fondant? You can check other site such as cakecentral.com and see some of this descussion. Remember you cake is a fresh bake cake made from scratch, the bakery only have must of the time frozen cakes, who knows from when. 2.65 to 3.75 in buttercream for slice. Fondant and gumpaste start price 4.00 per slice and up. Look at Collette Peters, minimun cake price is 800.00.Maybe one day ,we can do the same, lol

Thanks for your great comments. I want to go on record that if I ever make $800 per cake I think I will just move my bed, couch, easy chair, and all my clothes into the stove and live there! Can you imagine being so in demand that your cakes are worth $800? I have seen some of Collette's cakes in one of her books- they are exquisite- such attention to detail. She really is the guru of fondant. I have much to learn! Thanks for the hint about cake central- I'll look it up.

I have no idea what you can ask for it but that cake sure looks great. Maybe you could compare prices from official bakers to get an idea.
