I remember reading some time ago that there are certain Buddhists that believe that each and every human being on this earth has a predetermined number of heart beats before they die. So the length of your life would depend on how you live it! For example, if you practice a healthy lifestyle with exercise and meditation; then your heart beat would slow down and therefore increase your lifespan. Do the opposite (like me!) and your heartbeat will be faster and you will use up your allocated number of beats quicker! Interesting way to look at it and makes perfect sense if you ask me!

From a biological point of view, the heart has indeed a predetermined number of beats before it wears out. A bit like a coffee machines that can serve a certain number of cups before packing in and be ready for the bin. Most of the time, though, we die before this number is up through accidents or diseases. So slowing down the heart rate doesn't amount to much. Besides, the body contains many other organs that degenerate faster and are likely to cause a shut-down before the old ticker is worn.

Yes you are right. But still an interesting way to espouse the benefits of leading a healthy lifestyle! Maybe the motto "Here for a good time not a long time!" is better suited for a lot of us! Thanks for responding.

I get so anxious at times I guess I'm in trouble. :) Seriously though, this is an interesting and very down to earth way of looking at things concerning personal health. I admire Buddhism because it has such practical teachings along with strongly spiritual teachings.

I too admire Buddhism a lot. Power from within! There doesn't appear to be much of the "commercialized" input surrounding it and its all about enlightenment and personal/inner growth. How could that possibly be a bad thing? Thanks for responding.
