How many days can you go without washing?

Singapore
March 6, 2007 9:03am CST
Here in Singapore, the weather is hot and humid. The majority of the people here tends to shower at least once a day. I remember my university days when I got to interact with people of many nationalities. Some of my friends from other countries do not have this shower-once-a-day habit. They may instead choose to shower once only in a few days - much to the discomfort of some sensitive female noses in the lecture theatres! :P So I am just wondering - how many days can you go without washing yourself? Any reasons why you keep to this frequency? There is no right or wrong answer, so let's have some fun discussing. ;-)

Like Singapore, the Philippines's weather is also hot and humid. I always shower twice a day. I can't live a day longer without taking one. When I stayed in US for 3 years, I took shower even in winter season. I don't care if I'm shaking like crazy. It was a habit I acquired since birth.

I force myself to shower everyday when I visit cold countries too. If I stop showering for a day, I just have a feeling I am going to fall sick the next. :P

Without showering every day i feel unclean and uncomfortable. I like to know i am clean, presentable, and odor-free at all times. I do this for myself and people in my environment. I cannot imagine living just a few decades back when taking a bath was something to be done once or twice a year.

Same here, like smith21471 and you, I just need to feel clean. If I am going out, I will make sure I scrub myself clean so that I will be presentable! :P

Im sure I could go a week without washing. If it was mandatory or for reasons beyond my control. I shower once a day as often as possible. In the summer here in the USA during the summer I may shower 3 or even 4 times due to the heat & humidity. I lived on the strees long ago and hand't had a bath or shower for 5 weeks. I couldn't smell myself as I was used to it. But I wasn't welcome anywhere public. HAHAHA. Thanks for a great & interesting topic. HAHA. Happy postings from Grandpa Bob

Well it's also hot in here, and I always take a bath everyday. I don't wanna go outside and mingle with others smelling bad, I would melt in humiliation if that happens. And everytime I go home, I would only rest for a while then ready myself for a shower. It's very important for me to be clean, it's very relaxing and the feelings much comfortable.

Thanks for bringing this up...here in the Philippines, our weather is pretty hot and humid too and it's kind of annoying to be near to people who don't bother taking even just one shower a day. I was once teaching in a language school before and most of our students are korean. Well, it's not about to bad mouth them but yeah, I guess they are just not used to taking the "at least one shower a day" habit religiously and sometimes the smell really is distracting at times.

Well here in the United States, people who don't shower usually are looked down upon or made fun of because they are dirty. I shower at the least once a day, usually when I wake up in the morning, i head straight for the shower, I could never go out in public without showering and doing my hair and makeup. I would just feel grungey!! But thats how I was taught when I grew up that you always need to clean yourself. I am glad for that, because I love to be clean!! :)

I agree. I will shower everyday because I would feel dirty if I didn't. Besides a shower is a nice way to wake up in the morning. :)

Actually this may sound strange but I used to have compulsive behaviour about this and at one time in my life I showered about 10-20 times a day. Now I am more "normal" since I just shower 2 times a day but i ahve to admit that I am off for a few days then I might shower or take up to 5 baths a day. i just liek to feel the water and I am kind of addicted to it *lol*

i am from india and my hometown is quite close to himalayas so the weather conditions are easily influenced if there is a snow fall in high altitudes especially during winter (quite cold), and during summers temperature may reach as high as 45-48 C and during monsoon again it is hot and humid, so i prefer to bath everyday since during summers you are badly sweating, in winters if it is too cold and i am not well then i sometimes skip for a day, so during summers i shower two times and for the rest of the year only once.

At least twoor three times but i use a natural soap soi don'tlose toomuch of the naturaloils of my body. A lot of these chemical nshampoos cause dry skin and other problems and yes, there is nothing more off putting than smelly armpits!!

I grew up in a "cold" country (Denmark) and when I was little, it was certainly true that many people (especially if they didn't have "physical" jobs) only showered or bathed maybe 2-3 times a week. At least in the winter. I was taught that this was "OK," although mostly something "older people" did, while younger generations usually bathed every day. I do think age might be significant-- I am 46, and until I was 6, we only HAD bathtubs, no showers. We moved to the south of Spain (a warm Mediterranean climate) when I was 13, and I automatically got in the habit of showering every day (or twice a day) once we moved there, and have kept that habit ever since. But to answer your question directly, I have gone five days without a shower, when camping and backpacking... since there are no showers out in the woods! But I realize that's a bit different...

Yes, I can imagine that being in the Army, and on a field exercise would make for limited showers. When we went camping, a big part of the "return to civilization" was to stop in a motel on the way home, rent a room so everyone could get cleaned before we went back to the city. Thanks for the best response!

Indeed, I have my fair share of camping (of course.. since I was in the army :P) and not showering then and not showering here in the city are 2 completely different matters. :P

Am here in the Philippines and I don't think not taking a shower in a day is a good idea, not unless you wanted some sarcastic people raise their eyebrows on you. It's pretty hot here and it's very rare if you won't sweat out even just a little for the whole day. Sometimes, I even take shower twice just to get that smell off. I don't like to smell bad and I don't like it either when people around me are not taking their shower. Annoying!

My personal thoughts about this will be depending on the weather and to the person responsible on his personal hygiene. For me, if the weather is too hot I need to take a bath because I don't feel comfortable when going out specially interacting with different people. At least taking a bath twice a day in the morning before going out, and before going to bed to refresh myself. Even in a cold weather, I still need to take a bath before and after going out to preserve a good hygiene. What I do when it's cold is to boil water in a kettle since I don't have a electric shower heater. NO! I don't use the boiled water directly from the kettle..ehehehe! I combine it to the cold water to get the cold water warm.

Daily showering is my minimum. In the summer when it is hot I shower morning and night. I prefer to be clean and dirt is not good for your clothing, hair, or you. Or even others like you pointed out. I would hope that washing up would be the minimum that anyone would do.

Me, I am a very dirty and lazy person man. Just don't ask how lazy I am. Just to tell you I have stayed thirsty at nights just because I was getting to lazy to go down and get my bottle filled. And talking about washing and bathing, I am quite a person, I have even stayed a week without washing or might be even more. Actually specially in winters, when its cold I prefer to use hot water but I am lazy enough to not to heat any water and so no bathing either. I do bath when go home fro hostel as there at my home have gyesers. Anyy ways in summers I do not stretch the non washing periods that long, I just make it a point to atleast bath once a day cause then there is no problem of hot or cold water. Take care May GOD Bless YOU

hmmm... do u want an honest answer?;) if it's about the capacity then i can go on without a bath for 2 weeks.lol but really it's not the matter in summer time which is very hot in my area(40+) i take shower 2 times a day if i don't have to go out if i have to then it can go up to 3 times. but in winter (which is very foggy and wet in my city) i usually take the advantage and may not bath for 2 days straight;)don't think me dirty because i feel i m among one of those lucky people who don't have a bad body odour!!;D

I bath every other day, I live in England where it's usually quite cold and I don't do any work that makes me dirty so there's really no need to bath much more often than that. I obviously wash if I'm dirty or smelly but it's a waste of water to have a whole bath and I don't have a shower in my house.
