Crochet Beginners-Do you understand patterns?

I am thinking of making a website that it set up more of a person telling you how to do the pattern without all the messy codes. All of the creations would be out of my own brain. If by chance they are not, they would be credited. Would a website like that be helpful?

You know I can crochet simple stuff but I have no idea how to read a pattern. I wish I had of learned cause my mom was great at crocheting and knitting. There has got to be a really helpful site on the net where it would teach you the stitches and how to read a pattern. Good Luck I hope it works out for you.

that is the same with me. my mom knitted and crochet and when i was a kid she would help me with patterns. the problem is now im not a kid and still have to call my mommy :P so ive resorted to making things out of my head based on need. My more recent projects have been a side sholder purse and a cell cover for my phone.

i think a site teaching people how to read patterns is great. sure you can make things out of your head but it's alway sso nice to open up the world of seeing a picture on a pattern and then being able to make it. that way you have it all available.

forgot to add, my mother insisted i learn how to read patterns when i was little and she was teaching me. i am so glad she did because to really teach someone is to have them be able to work independently of your help. my mom is now passed on and i have her crocheting legacy still with me, and i've taught my daughter to crochet also

My neighbor just gave me a book on how to teach yourself. I'm thinking this might not be a good idea. I started and am so stuck. A website would be most helpful. :)

Blue-celphone bag - i make this celpnone bag for a simple reason, most of women love to walk with out to many things on hand but can go out without their mobile, atm and lip balm on hand so, this is the answer.
its a nice idea, it would be very helpful to others if you will share your brilliant idea and make it a readable pattern for us to follow and enjoy.

Reading patterns really isn't that hard. But, I've seen many patterns that weren't proof-read or I felt wasn't self-explanitory enough for a beginner. It helps (until you learn) to have a chart right by you until you know that a dc is a double crochet (Yarn over once, insert, draw up and draw through 2 loops twice.) Anytime you see *, ( ), or { } means that what's after or between those is something that is going to be repeated in that round. It's much easier to put (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) 12 times, than to list 3dc, ch 2, 3 dc, 3dc, ch 2, 3 dc, 3dc, ch 2, 3dc..until you've written it out twelve times. Probably the most confusing part for beginners is when the pattern says 'join' at the end of the round. Many patterns do this. It usually means to slip stitch in the starting stitch of the round.

Maiahmae, I think that would be a great website! There are probably lots of people out there that need help to read a pattern and I think it would be most helpful for people to access the information on a website rather than have to get out to a liabrary to borrow a book or get to a bookstore for a helpful book. Especially for those of us who live out in the country and stores are a 1 hour ride. It would be much more conveninet to hop on the net and find the anwers there when you need them, while you are in the middle of a project and are stumped!

I would love to learn how to crochet but I dont even know where to start nor do I think I have the patience to learn and I would much rather teach myself how to do it. My grandma used to crochet and I have blankets that she did.
